I wrote something over emotional on a slack channel.

passionateApricot39 August 21st, 2020

Im a Web Developer and Im on a slack channel with some old work coleagues. A lot of people were writing about how its annoying when people use their mouse instead of keyboard short cuts. Anyway I wrote something and got told off for breaking the rules of the channel. This is what I wrote:

"What about people with mobility issues or learning disabilities they might not be able to use these tools, and sometimes these things arent super obvious. I think tech really needs to move away from this idea that one size fits all and that everyone should do things in exactly the same way."

Anyway I'm always super akward and I feel super ebarresed. I know most people would brush these things off and move on with their day, but I get really upset. I wish I was more resiliant. I also feel like I shouldent really say anythingn ever, as I just get myself in trouble.

Is this exactly what you wrote? I dont see anything wrong with it. But at the same time I can see how it could rub some people the wrong way. Or how it could be grating to someone if they were coming to the thread for emotional gratification.

Either way, it hurt, and you are hurting, and theres nothing wrong with that whatsoever.

If you wanted to keep the peace, maybe, but I dont know if you would have been happy with this decision in the long run.

Have you had similar experiences in the past?

@sympatheticKitten8138,

I think I was just frustrated because developers always throw around words like stupid, and suggest that people that have difficulty don't belong in tech. I dunno, I just let it rip I guess and I have worked in tech long enough to realize that it's not a good idea to stick your neck out.

Tbh these are not bad guys, it's just what they are used to. Everyone in tech talks like that, and a lot of people especially developers like being part of an exclusive club that makes them special, it's just that, that kind of talk is mean.

It must be a tech thing, I can definitely see that, but it could be a personality type thing too. If you

There is really nothing wrong at all about what you wrote. I used to work in tech and will begin again soon and I have always thought the same thing. I understand to how getting in trouble for that can ruin your day. I would just avoid that channel for a bit personally. Not only did you not say anything in an offensive way, but you are entitled to your opinion and you expressed it in a non-offensive way. They did wrong not you.
