Class subjects are upsetting me a lot

bunnygarden January 19th, 2022

I've been taking two classes.

The first, "Human Sexuality" refers to genitals as strictly male or female. Even in discussions, other members in the class suggest that all people with a vagina or capable of an abortion have to be female. It's extremely distressing as a trans person to see them actively misgender me by talking about parts of my body and saying that if I have them, I must be a woman.

The second is "Human Growth & Development". I didn't realize how many people in the class were going to be parents with small children or how much the class was centered upon it. For example, several adult stages of life as described in terms of a person becoming a parent and raising their offspring. Lectures about what makes a good parent. I came here to learn about sociocultural and psychological stages, not about how to raise kids! I never want to have children, and I hate that it supposedly defines my adult life...

Ah, human growth and development, I took it once... If I had a dollar for every time a parent hijacked the class for an entire day… That might be the case with your class if ¾ of the class period is students asking the professor questions about parenting. Expect the parenting unit to take FOREVER. I understand that raising their kids are a big part of parents’ lives, but some people (like me) in the class don’t have kids and could care less about them.

However, parenting is a big part of psychological and social development, and different parenting styles and their effectiveness would probably be covered. I don’t know much about your class, but the reason why the adult stages focus on parenting is probably due to how it relates back to early development. Don’t take it personally, it’s just the nature of the course, and the course naturally attracts a lot of parents.😊

As for your first class, wth.😨 That's a really cruel discussion to have in a human sexuality class.
