Anxious as heck

Hey all, just wanted to share that I am feeling a *lot* of anxiety. I am kind of nauseous from how anxious I am. My job is stressing me so much. I feel like I want to sleep but I don’t know if I can. I just feel so overwhelmed and stressed out.

Phew. I think I need to just sit and breathe. Today has been a lot. My job is way too stressful, there is too much to do. I like my coworkers but the workload at this job is insane. It is absolutely ridiculous. I want to yell.

I think maybe I should just sit with these emotions and let myself feel them. I just feel so anxious and overwhelmed right now.

Dang, I don’t even know what I want right now. But I am just so stressed out and anxious.

I also didn’t sleep very well yesterday, which sucks. I think maybe I just need to breathe.

Are you new to this work or to the company? Has training been offered? Are your colleagues able to give you pointers to make your job easier? It usually takes a few weeks to settle in.

I’m not new to the job, it’s just really stressful… And we’ve had a ton of turnover… I work as a union rep right now and it’s not very structured and doesn’t have much training provided. It feels like everything is an emergency all the time and it’s really hard to manage the workload, I think that’s the hardest thing for me….

Are your work hours reasonable ? It seems your job follows you mentally at home and you can't disconnect.

How about making a list of what needs doing the next day before you leave work? It might help you leave work at work.

You’re definitely correct; the work follows me mentally at home and I can’t disconnect. I think one thing I could do would be to try to at least have a short wrap up session at the end of each day to prep myself for the next day, like you are suggesting.

I think I need to discuss this in therapy more, as well, because it really is affecting me a lot. I actually made a career counseling appointment yesterday because I am thinking of quitting my job and finding another one. We’ll see how that goes-

I really appreciate your thoughts and ideas—

Making that appointment is a proactive move. I have had busy workloads but understanding supervisors who trusted me. You are probably viewed as dedicated, even devoted, and trustworthy, but it obviously is costing you

I think my supervisors respect me in a lot of ways but I am just so exhausted. I do think looking for another job is a good move. Or at least thinking about how I can use this experience to get another job or think more along the lines of “how can I build my resume?”

I usually don’t think like that but I think I need to…

Hi!

If the workload is damaging, overwhelming, and unsustainable, something is wrong that must be corrected at your workplace.

They are burning out their experienced, trained and knowledgeable people. That even goes against the company's best interests.

In the meanwhile, you might protect yourself by setting boundaries to the reasonable amount of work you can actually do without hurting your mental and physical health.

You have the right to be healthy, to protect your body and mind.

If things seem like they will stay this way forever, you might consider starting to develop a "Plan B" to eventually go to work at a healthier workplace.

Thankfully, you know powerful tools to cope with this unhealthy situation, like self-acceptance and conscious breathing. There are many good practices for coping that you might find online.

But what's crucial is starting to deal with the root of the problem.

You will start feeling better even just by beginning to do that.

I wish you feel better soon.

All the best!

Marcelo.

Thank you Marcelo. Something actually happened today that really stressed me out even more and so I decided to make a career counseling appointment. I have free career counseling sessions through the college I graduated from so I am going to take advantage of that and start doing it.

I also just need to take care of myself better. And I am going to try to talk to my therapist about a lot of this as well….

Thank you greatly-

I did a while back. I think what I mostly need right now is to start exercising because I haven’t done much of that for a while…
