Fear of taking new medications

Clover77 October 1st, 2015

Hope this is allowed, if not please delete.

But I get so scared of taking new meds that I sometimes have to be hospitalized short-term just to get through them. I've had a lot of bad reactions which just makes it worse. People think I'm really not well when I say I absolutely have to be monitored taking new meds (I live alone) for me to take it...

Anyone else like this and is there anything that can be done about it...

Hi, I am sorry you're going through this rough patch. I just started a new med last week and it's been really rough, but it's starting to get better. I am having a hard time sleeping and the anxiety is difficult but you're not alone. When it gets really bad for me, I sit in a chair and just do controlled breathing or play some relaxation videos on youtube. The relaxation videos have helped the most. Hope it gets better for you really soon!

I hope this response isn't too late to be helpful! I used to be very afraid of changing my medication as well, though it sounds like you are even more afraid than I was.

It definitely helps to have a professional really closely monitor you as you change your meds. I was on a medication that wasn't helping me for a VERY long time because I was too afraid to change, until finally my therapist convinced me to switch. At first, the new medication seemed to make me more anxious and suicidal, but it helped to have my therapist and psychiatrist to tell these things to, and to know that they were keeping an eye on the developments. Once time passed and the medication has gotten more into my system, I actually think it's The One. I feel so much better than I ever have.

This is what my therapist said that helped me: You are in control. You are not forced to take anything. If you don't like a medication you are on, you can go off it. It may take the annoyance of making an appointment and convincing your doctor that it's not right for you, but it is worth it. Stay firm and always be honest about the side-effects you're feeling. I know it can be very disheartening to always be changing medications, especially when you have no idea what it will do to you or if it will make you feel worse. But you must always remember that it is all in your control. You can change or go off it any time. And there are people who will stand by, give you support, and track your side-effects and take you off if they suspect you're not doing well.

It's tough, but finally finding the right treatment will be so worth it. Hang in there.

I am sorry you have to go through all this, this must be very exhausting .. What kind of medications are you talking about? I have another problem, I abuse some online drugstores in search of better and better meds. I have tons of special supplements, vitamins and meds from iHerb and online pharmacies , seems like I need professional help, too.
