Quickest fix to anxiety or panic attacks?

unassumingWater9583 January 19th, 2023

Hey guys want to start a thread on how you quickly fix an oncoming panic attack or a bout of anxiety especially in public? I do diaphragmatic breathing which helps me most times. And I don't look weird while doing it (maybe sound funny but who cares). That's the easiest way I find to activate my parasympathetic response. Would love to hear others methods and share stories!

Hi! Thank you so much for sharing your technique and for coming up with this thread idea!

Here are some other techniques that may help:

— Progressive muscle relaxation: Tense and release different muscle groups in your body, starting with your toes and working your way up to your head. This technique can help to release physical tension and anxiety.

— Grounding techniques: Grounding techniques, such as focusing on your five senses, can help to bring you back to the present moment and reduce feelings of dissociation or detachment. Try to identify five things you can see, four things you can touch, three things you can hear, two things you can smell, and one thing you can taste.

— Positive self-talk: Remind yourself that the panic attack is temporary and that you have the ability to cope. Repeat positive affirmations to yourself, such as “I am strong” or “I can handle this”. This will help to change negative thoughts and feelings into positive ones.

— Seek Help: Reach out to a friend or a professional, such as a therapist, who can help you to understand and manage your panic attacks. They can also teach you more effective coping mechanisms and strategies to help you manage panic attacks in public.

It is important to remember that these techniques may not work for everyone, but trying different methods can help you find what works best for you! :)

As @Mya000 rightly explains, "grounding" techniques are very useful for dealing with panic attacks and anxiety peaks when you perceive they might be coming or are just starting.

Here, a couple of links to good lists of useful grounding techniques:

Hello, The title of your post got my fast attention!~ I would appreciate it muchly if you can tell me how to do diaphragmatic breathing. I struggled for years with debilitating anxiety and related issues but mostly recently have it under control for about 3-4 months. Thanks so much in advance!~

Thanks so much for starting this thread. I've called a cousin that has gone through the same things almost & has an understanding for the rest. But I've gotten to freaking out before i call, because i usually have someone else to call, but don't anymore. Just get too confused. Now I'll try these methods.. thank you!
