Driving Anxiety

Ardi7 November 13th, 2023

I’ve always had pretty bad anxiety about driving. I didn’t get my drivers license until I was 18 because I refused to drive. Luckily I live in a pretty small town so far the most part I’ve grown accustomed to being able to drive to get my basic needs such as driving to work or to the store. When I left for college I had to drive four hours down the highway to get to campus. The second time I made that trip I ended up totaling my car so eventually I had to move back home because I went broke not being able to find work. I saved up enough to buy a new car a year ago and managed to be able to drive most of the time. Lately my anxiety has been really bad especially while driving. I’ve had to cancel multiple plans because I could not drive. When I try to drive I get extremely naseous and dizzy and I feel like my going to black out because my heart is beating so fast. I feel like I’ve tried everything: music, podcasts, gum, cranking the a/c. I need to be able to drive myself. I don’t feel safe in Ubers and I can’t always get rides. Has anyone had this issue and has been able to overcome it? If so how?

Do you think it is connected to the accident?   I mean any accident or close call can make people nervous and apprehensive about driving....

i myself do not like driving in heavy traffic but in all actuality who does... It is not easy to overcome but when you think of how much it will impact your life and your ability to go places or do things.   i think many can have a therapy session with yourself and work slowly to feel more comfortable each time you drive.

Hey - I kinda know how you feel.  I get very panicky on single lane flyovers - convinced that that's where i'm going to break down.  Try doing some relaxation exercises before you drive.  Calm yourself.  Visualise the journey going from A to B without incident.  Breathe.  And - yes - try and drive when it's quiet - at least in the first instance.  Good Luck!

@Ardi7 I believe for the time being you should use other methods of transport, anxiety whist driving is not safe😞 it's probably because of the car incident. Maybe therapy is needed to work on tips and how to help yourself ❤ good luck sweetie ❤ gives you a giant festive tiny hug

Hello @Ardi7

I'm really sorry to hear about the struggles you're facing with driving anxiety. It's a tough situation, especially since driving is such an essential part of daily life for many. Your resilience in facing this challenge, from managing your initial apprehension to navigating the aftermath of your accident, is truly commendable. It's okay to have these feelings, and it's important to acknowledge them.

Have you considered seeking support from a professional, like a therapist who specializes in anxiety or a driving instructor skilled in helping anxious drivers? Sometimes, having a structured plan and support can make a big difference. Also, practicing relaxation techniques or mindfulness before and during driving might help manage the physical symptoms you're experiencing. Remember, it's a journey, and it's okay to take small steps. Your safety and well-being are the most important things ❤️
