ADHD and sleep

Makaykay167 June 8th

I’ve always had a hard time with sleeping but I’m at the point where my brain “turns on” before I even open my eyes. I mean, I will have barely woken up and a song starts playing in my head and then some thoughts come slowly creeping in. It’s part of why I grab my phone first thing in the morning, it helps to distract me. I was just wondering if anyone else experiences this and if you have any suggestions for sleeping.

@Makaykay167 Hey, I'm sorry to hear you're struggling with this. It sounds really challenging to deal with your brain feeling active right from the moment you wake up. Many people with ADHD experience similar difficulties with sleep and morning routines. Have you tried any strategies like establishing a calming bedtime routine or using relaxation techniques before bed? Sometimes small adjustments can make a big difference.

I experience the same thing, and it might not work for everyone, but I just listen to the thoughts for a while, even if they're painful, and then once I need to get up I tell my brain 'right, that's enough of that' and get on with my day. I've found that doing this means I can focus better the rest of the day as the thoughts aren't trying to creep in as I work or suchlike. Good luck ❤️

@Makaykay167 Managing ADHD and sleep problems involves creating a consistent bedtime routine and environment conducive to sleep. Limiting screen time before bed, reducing caffeine intake, and engaging in relaxing activities like reading or listening to calming music can help. Regular exercise during the day can also improve sleep quality. Cognitive-behavioral therapy for insomnia (CBT-I) may be beneficial. Additionally, consulting a healthcare professional for personalized strategies and, if necessary, appropriate medication can be effective.
