Not sure how to go about getting tested

charlie1510 September 23rd

Hey I’m Charlie and I’m a teen, relatively new here so not yet sure how this all works. That being said I’ve been struggling for a while now, multiple people including teachers have mentioned that they think I may have adhd but my parents are having none of it. Nobody else in my family has adhd so maybe they’re just don’t know how to deal with it? I’m not sure, but it’s really affecting me and my education. I know that as a minor I probably can’t get myself tested without their consent but I just don’t know how to cope with it. I feel like there’s something wrong with me and cant help but think that maybe if I got tested I would at least know if it’s a medical thing or not, ie if it’s out of my control or if there’s something I can do to fix it.

any help would be appreciated xx

@charlie1510 Things vary so much place to place, many school systems do have resources for this though. Asking a guidance counsellor at your school, if you have one or setting up a time with a teacher to discuss options might be helpful.

Hi Charlie, I just wanted to say welcome to 7 cups and our sub community here. You are in the right place for asking questions, sharing your experiences or looking for support. I am sorry to hear that your parents are not supportive in navigating this with you. I can say that for myself, getting well educated  about ADHD has really helped me find clarity and confirmation about both myself and my daughter potentially having it. We currently live in a country where there are no specialists to test and confirm this for us so I have relied heavily on doing my own research and reading books on the subject by various professionals.

You can also find quite a bit on information online as there are websites dedicated to this topic. Gaining that knowledge may help provide some answers for you while you start to unravel and figure this all out. Having a look at the posts made here in the ADHD community as well as reading the ADHD training guide in your dashboard could be good places to find more information as well. Wishing you all the best Charlie, I am glad you are here. 😊
