I can say anecdotically that i once I gave it to a person who was addicted to drugs, cigarettes and alcohol, and she stated herself that in the middle of reading the book she started to drink less and now she does not actually take anything. Before I got to know the original, I also read a Polish translation that concerned a different topic (porn) and although I wasn't addicted, I realized it was a waste of time and I stopped too.
