January 2022 Events: National Nothing Day

QuietMagic January 16th, 2022

Hello everyone! January 16th is National Nothing Day.

nothing-day-1.jpg

Background of National Nothing Day

National Nothing Day was proposed by newspaper columnist Harold Coffin in 1972 in the hopes of “satirically reigning in what Coffin considered a glut of recently established, useless commemorative days” (source).

January 16th is also Appreciate a Dragon Day, International Hot and Spicy Food Day, and National Fig Newton Day if you prefer to celebrate one of those instead. (Personally I'm planning to say something thoughtful to the next dragon I see walking their dog.)

Coffin created the National Nothing Foundation in order to try to raise awareness of National Nothing Day, but consistent with its name the organization has never held any meetings.

How do I celebrate National Nothing Day?

I'm glad you asked! Here are just some possible ideas (source):

  • Do nothing: Good luck though since if you try to do nothing, you’re doing something ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
  • Send a blank e-mail to someone: They definitely won’t find it confusing
  • Give ‘nothing’ responses: Ignore or deflect any questions that are asked of you, and if someone tells you that you’re being rude then just explain that you’re celebrating
  • Send an empty gift box: You won’t have to worry about receiving a return gift
  • Raise awareness on social media: This is an important day and everybody deserves to know about it

"I tried celebrating like you told me to and it didn't go well..."

Okay, in all seriousness, please don’t do any of these things. 😅 Except maybe the first one, if you feel like it.

An alternative way of understanding this day is that it is encouraging people to feel like it’s okay to relax and take time to care for themselves. 😊

Question for reflection

What are you doing to celebrate National Nothing Day?

I love this!

I do wonder about all these National Days though - is it just the US or do other countries have other days which appear to be frivolous or consumer based?

Other than things connected to awareness days of disabilities, there are some here that are social awareness as well as some heritage based ones. Ie. Museum day, History Week, National Hunting Trapping and Fishing Heritage Day.

There is also National Day to Promote Health and Fitness for all Canadians - that one just rolls off the tongue, doesn't it.

The closest I can come to something like Dragon Day here is National FIddling Day, as in the instrument, not fidgeting. ' to celebrate the appreciation, beauty and history of fiddle music, and in honour of Antonio Stradivari, the renowned crafter of stringed instruments'

Maybe I just don't know where to find all of the more lighthearted ones for Canada? Even if not I do know many Canadians are happy to co-opt things like National Ice Cream Day from the US (July 17 in case anyone wants to plan for that).

@AffyAvo

Wow, you might be onto something. Maybe it's localized to the United States, lol.

@QuietMagic

NONE of any of this will EVER let me do any of it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! it ALL INSISTS I have a Google account to do this, all the other events, all post things filled out after pop-up rooms, just EVERYTHING.

THIS whole place wants to include everyone in all ways yet will not allow you to do anything almost without having a Google account!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Is this inclusive?????????????? So anyone without a Google account, active and registered and signed in with it on 7cups can NOT participate in MOST everything. This is inclusive???????????????? you go to great lengths to include most everything under the sun but I must have a Google account to be included here ?????????????????????????

There is a lot of talk here but when it comes down to things, things much is so different. I don't go around reporting things. Things are done here as they are wanted to be done. This is just an example. Who cares really? answer---No one.

Hi, thanks for sharing this issue and bringing attention to it. 💜 If I'm understanding, you're saying that many activities on the site are non-inclusive insofar as they require a Google account in order to participate:

  • Many different activities on this site require filling out Google forms (e.g. forms after pop-up rooms, forms for forum events, etc.)
  • In order to fill out a Google form, you need to have a Google account but not everybody has one (or wants to have one)
  • The impact of this is that anybody without a Google account is excluded from being able to participate in lots of different activities, which makes the events (and the site in general) feel non-inclusive

And then the emotional impact of this is:

  • This feels especially disheartening to you when probably it feels everybody on the site is always talking about how inclusive, supportive, and compassionate they are 😊 ...and yet you're noticing (and experiencing the negative effects of) this gap in that inclusion
  • You're sharing this in the hope of something being done about it, but you're skeptical that anybody will really care or help in any way

***

Tagging @CheeryMango who is the subcommunity coordinator in the hopes that they might be able to help with this.

My own thoughts: the general resolution that comes to mind for me is, "If there's a form that you're unable to fill out, feel free to PM this leader with your responses to these questions and they'll take care of it for you." If having all of the responses in one central location for review/tracking/processing purposes is helpful, then maybe the leader could fill out the form on behalf of that person (using the responses they provided) -- since my understanding is that the e-mail account that's used to fill out the form doesn't actually matter.

@QuietMagic

Thank you @QuietMagic

I feel you fully understand the situation. Thank you. Thank you also for trying by further tagging and seeing if something will be addressed and be done.

What I personally believe will and will not be done is not in consideration. The site is for the good of many. I believe what will and will not be done has also already been decided for the time being, contracts, terms, etc. It is all business decisions. Things in businesses trickle downward. I understand much. But...............

Thank you for your help @QuietMagic

@IcedCoffee211109

Glad I was able to understand. 💜

7 Cups might not be a traditional business in that there are only a handful of paid employees with a big hierarchy of unpaid volunteers beneath that. But can agree with your point that it's a large organization with a lot of complex parts and processes and the priority is meeting the needs of most people (though possibly they sometimes don't succeed at that either 😊) and this may result in certain things falling through the cracks.

I do still hope that it might be reasonably/easily possible to accommodate any exceptions in this specific instance.

Hi, I was talking with CheeryMango and something they were able to do to fill out a Google form without being logged into a Google account is to use Incognito Mode in Google Chrome. (Other browsers probably have a similar feature.)

Could you give that a try?

It's not a good idea to encourage people to do this. Most of them probably will...

@justasmallwarrior

I'm not too worried:

  • There are multiple strong hints that this post is satirical
  • There is an entire section telling people not to do the "actions" mentioned in this post
  • Until your reply, nobody had interacted with this thread for nearly a month
