Celebrating Book Lover's Day with some LGBTQ+ Books!
Happy Book Lover’s Day!
[Image depicts a row of standing books of various sizes and colours arranged in rainbow order]
As it’s Book Lover’s Day today, I thought I would write up a post where we could talk about LGBTQ+ books, primarily LGBTQ+ fiction. I’ve personally found that books with the LGBTQ+ fiction label often range from mentioning the word gay two or three times in the whole book in reference to some secondary character, to hypersexualized tales where a character is reduced solely to their sexuality or gender identity, to something a bit more balanced and normalizing, that remembers that LGBTQ+ people are more than their LGBTQ+ labels, and don’t all fit into stereotypes.
Some of my favourite books are where, while the main character is LGBTQ+ and this detail isn’t simply mentioned in passing, the main plot and focus of the story is not about their experiences of being LGBTQ+. It’s included much in the way a cis-het character’s love interests, gender expression and experiences are included, as a part of the story, but not the only story. I enjoy these as I find them the most normalizing, where acceptance is in some way assumed, and the fact that the character isn’t cis-het isn’t news.
Other books I have enjoyed do deal more with the struggles one faces as part of the LGBTQ+ community but are done so in a respectful way that is careful to avoid simply reinforcing stereotypes. I find these are great when we are needing to feel someone understands our experiences and struggles.

I did a quick survey about some of the LGBTQ+ books people have enjoyed and have compiled it here, perhaps you’ll want to read one of them, or add your own suggestions to our list?

“Untamed” by Glennon Doyle
“On Being Different: What It Means to Be a Homosexual” by Merle Miller
LGBTQ+ Fiction:
“Simon vs. the Homo Sapiens Agenda”, “The Upside of Unrequited” and “Leah on the Offbeat” by Becky Albertalli
“Red, White & Royal Blue” by Casey McQuiston
“Two Boys Kissing” by David Levithan
“Aristotle and Dante Discover the Secrets of the Universe” by Benjamin Alire Saenz
“Bluebird” by Ciel Pierlot

@EmotionsListener
Hi Emotions! 😊❤️ Thank you for your forum post! This, my friend, is quite brilliant! I enjoyed reading every word and every line of what it is that you said! While I may not be LBGTQ+ specifally, I am an ally! I got friends! *high fives* 😊
I whole heartedly agree, that we are not our sexuality, whether straight or LBGTQ+. We are people! We are simply human beings! I am grateful that you have presented books that one can read for entertainment purposes that might be worthy as well as creating the forum post so that others can share things that they have read that they have enjoyed as well!
*high fives* 😊 and big *hugs* ❤️
@SparkyGizmo
Allies always welcome here! I do hope that we can get a good list of some of the better options available because I know there are many disappointing reads out there that either don't feel like they belong in the LGBTQ+ fiction section, or worse reinforce hurtful stereotypes and are a whole new level of disappointing read.
Thanks for joining in the discussion! *hugs*
@EmotionsListener
Once again, well said my friend! I could not agree with you more! ❤️❤️❤️

So, do you seek out LGBTQ+ books? Why or why not?
I don't seek out LGBTQ books because it's not my way of life. Life is pretty busy for me right now and to actually find the time to read any book is hard. Some day in the future I do hope to read one though. I have a sister who is gay and I love her. I was so happy our judgemental mother (when she was here on Earth) was accepting of her. It was a big sigh of relief when she came out years ago and mom didn't lamb-bast her.
-
What do you look for when you read a book with LGBTQ+ characters?
I would look for the same things I like for in any other book...depth of character, a good plot and a satisfying end. And don't test reality, keep it real - unless it's fantasy.
-
If you could give authors of LGBTQ+ books feedback, what would you want them to know?
Keep it real. For someone like me, if/when I read a LGBTQ book I want an insight into what that world is really like for you. I want to learn, be informed. My mind is open so poor in the truth.
-
Any LGBTQ+ books you would, or maybe wouldn’t recommend?
I have no idea so I'll be coming back to see what other's are recommending. 😊
I've never really personally talked about LGBTQ that much. Yes, I've always made it known I am tolerant, that I believe love is love. But to really look at things like this, got to say this is my first dip. And at my age, makes me see how much my life has been outside the LGBTQ community. Warm hugs to all who reads this within the LGBTQ community. I haven't had the opportunity much to do that in person so I'll do it here.
@EmbStitcher33
Glad that your mother was able to be accepting of your sister, and that you are also so supportive. I hope you do find time to read one one day, perhaps if your sister is a reader she could even recommend one that speaks to her as another way to connect?
I think that's a great way to describe what a good LGBTQ+ book should be!
Also as you say keep it real or realistic (unless fantasy)! Though even in fantasy I prefer they are careful to avoid reinforcing unhelpful stereotypes as part of the fiction.
I hope we get some good recommendations for everyone, I want some new material to read as well, though I do have quite a list to read yet.
Also thank you for being an ally! ❤️
@EmotionsListener
It would be nice if they could drift away form YA romance and overly-quirky characters. I would like authors to focus on human, real, believable characters... in perhaps more boring, but richer plots.
A story that explores their identity and struggles outside of being LBGTQ+, coming of age or not.
I haven't found a book like that yet, but a very good one is The Lesbiana's Guide to Catholic School, by Sonora Reyes. It deals a lot with culture, family, reject and acceptance when coming out. Also, the main character is funny and diligent, but no superhero, if you know what I mean... she's relatable.
@TryingTBH2021
So you've noticed that too? There is more out there but it's harder to find and definitely less mainstream. I think as the current generation of youth gets older we may find that the LGBTQ+ section "grows up" too. At least I hope!
I am finding that there are finally some that strike a balance instead of being a book about being LGBTQ+, instead being a book with LGBTQ+ characters included as fully as any cis/het character. I really liked "Bluebird" by Ciel Pierlot for this reason. I believe the blurb begins something like "Lesbian gunslinger fights spies in space!" So not the most deep topic but I found it a very normalizing inclusion. The main character is a lesbian and has a girlfriend which is included in the telling of the story, but it isn't the story.
I'll have to add "The Lesbiana's Guide to Catholic School" to my reading list, thanks for sharing!
Thanks for joining in, hopefully we can have more quality and variety in the LGBTQ+ book section soon!
@EmotionsListener,
Hey, it feels good to know I'm not alone in this! Thanks for the recommendation, Bluebird is a pretty name.... I'll add it to my reading list too. Take care! 😊
