[Transcript] Open House: July 2019
Hi everyone! Back in July, we had an open house for leadership opportunities at 7 cups. You can read about it here. I know this is a little late, but here is a transcript of the questions and answers from that meeting.
Q: How to become a group mod?
A: If you are interested in group mod, I would recommend signing up for the room supporter program first. The room supporter program is open to members and listeners. Listener room supporter application is here: www.7cups.com/forum/GroupSupport_168/RoomSupporter_1769/ListenerRoomSupporterRequirementsandApplication_170262/ and Member room supporter application is here: www.7cups.com/forum/GroupSupport_168/RoomSupporter_1769/MemberRoomSupportersRequirementsandApplication_186045/
Q: Can members be a group mod?
A: Not at this time. However, there is a mentor level leadership position available to members in the forum track, and other leadership opportunities for members.
Q: What roles are available for members?
A: room supporter, forum supporter, forum member leader (mentor), forum member project leader (mentor leader), feed team, welcoming team, team member, social soldiers, Q&A, and the teams listed in community projects www.7cups.com/home/projectsandevents/. One thing to note is members cannot hold a mentor level position until they are 15+, just like listeners.
Q: Where can I find projects to join?
A: The help wanted category updates the projects that are recruiting each month. July's thread: www.7cups.com/forum/HelpWanted_188/HelpWantedJuly2019_1954/HelpWantedJuly2019_204544/. You can also reach out to individual project leads if you are interested in joining even though they aren't advertising. Members and listeners can check out community projects: www.7cups.com/home/projectsandevents/ and listeners can check out the listener community center, which hosts some listener centric projects: www.7cups.com/home/listenercommunitycenter/. you can also always pm the help wanted team (ex: karrot and MonBon) and we will help you find what you're looking for teamwise. The #helpwanted hashtag on the feed is also a useful resource: 7cups.com/~helpwanted
Q: Can someone explain the teen star track?
A: Teen star is a listener role with 6 tracks: forum, chatroom, quality, community, support team, and intern. An information post can be found here: this is a listener only link: www.7cups.com/forum/ListenerLearningJourney_149/MentorTeenStarSection_1964/TeenStarTracksInfosRequirements_205069/
Q: How can I volunteer while in high school?
A: You are not prohibited from joining a team just for being in high school, so the majority of project teams are available for you. The exception would be age restricted categories such as the adult rooms if you are not yet 18. Projects that specifically apply to high school include the internship program, the teen categories, and the student support community.
Q: How can I become a community teen star leader / What are the requirements for community teen star leader?
A: At this time, all CSTL applications are on hold while our new teen community manager @Heather225 audits all teen roles.
Q: What leadership opportunities are available for teens?
A: Teens can take on many roles ranging from just about anything: feed, forum, group support, teen star, internship, etc. If you are interested in it, it probably exists in some way. You can reach out to the help wanted team (Ex: KarrotCake or MonBon) and they can help you find the team you are looking for.
Q: Are there certificates to prove our volunteer and leadership hours?
A: For official volunteer hours (for example, to present you your school), I would recommend the internship program. Hope can serve as a contact reference and they will calculate your hours and things like that. otherwise, any listener can get certificates of their involvement on the training page: www.7cups.com/listener/training.php. You will need to confirm with your school if 7 cups can be used as official volunteer hours. Additionally, if you are applying for jobs or school applications, 7 cups can be included on your resume.
Q: What makes a leader, a leader?
A: I think this is a great question because it's something anyone can answer. Some examples are: passion, dedication, communication, and cooperation.
Q: Are there leadership positions that are more in the background?
A: Certainly! If you are not comfortable leading discussions or check-ins, but still want to help out, you should consider applying to be a project agent. A project agent is a listener role where you essentially perform more background type activities like organizing events, taglists, and more depending on what is needed for that community (or project) at that time. Listeners can learn more about being a project agent and apply here: https://www.7cups.com/forum/ListenerCommunityCenter_38/ProjectAgent_1327/ProjectAgentRoleandApplicationProcess_109208/
Q: In leadership roles, what are the different positions and their respective duties?
A: This is not a complete list, but:
Feed Team Member: Create content in the feed, such as inspirational quotes and images, informational posts and resources, and increase traffic to your community
Forum Team Member: Create supportive or informative posts and threads, reply to those needing support, and answer questions
Group Support Team Member: Create a supportive environment in your community's group support area by creating, attending, or hosting / co-hosting open chats, support sessions, or special event sessions
Subcommunity Team Member: Create a supportive environment in your community by creating content and supporting others in the feed, forum, and group support areas
Misc others: Chatroom or Quality Mentor / Teen Star, Q&A Team, etc. You can find additional projects here: www.7cups.com/home/projectsandevents/
Many of these teams are also "tiered" e.g. team member -> supporter -> mentor -> mentor leader or something similar.
Q: How many hours a week do I have to commit?
A: I would say in general it is about an hour per week per position, but this can vary. If you have questions about a specific position please feel free to ask.
Q: How do I apply for a leadership position? What does a forum supporter do? What does a team member do?
A: The majority of leadership positions have an application (usually a google form) that you can apply through. If you know the leader of the team you are wanting to apply to, they can provide you with the application. You can also message me and I will try to find the appropriate application for you.
A forum supporter creates supportive or informative posts and thread, reply to those needing support, and answer questions You can learn more about the forum supporter program and apply here: Learn about joining the forum team here: https://www.7cups.com/forum/ProjectsEvents_184/ForumTeam_686/UpdatedForumLeadershipApplications_51746/1/
A team member's duties vary largely from community to community. In general a team member will create a supportive environment in your community by creating content and supporting others in the feed, forum, and group support areas You should reach out to whomever is leading the community you are interested in becoming a team member for.
Q: What is a mega member? How can you become a mega member?
A: A mega member is a member with a leadership role. For example, if you are a forum supporter or room supporter on a member account, you are also a mega member and have access to the mega member room.
Q: For someone in the GMT +8 timezone and who has limited free time (working 9-6!), what kinds of leadership opportunities are available? Will things like room discussions ever happen at hours that aren't completely impractical for me?
A: There are several leadership positions that happen on your own time, such as feed, forum, Q&A, project agent, or other teams. We have launched 24/7 moderation, so trained room supporters are able to host sessions in the support session room at any time they please as long as the room is available.
Q: How difficult is it as a leader when you meet new obstacles you have never experienced before and how do you deal with them?
A: Please feel free to ask questions at any point, whether you're a member, listener, new leaders, or a seasoned veteran leader. We are always here to help you.

@MonBon This is a great post! I bet the Open House was really helpful in addressing questions about community leadership here on 7cups. I'm looking forward to seeing this happen often and also at different times to accommodate timezones c: Thanks to @KarrotCake as well for hosting one.
