...See more Hobbies Help Our Mental Health! Mental health and self-care are intricately linked, and engaging in hobbies can be a powerful tool to support both.  Hobbies are very personal. Each of us likes and chooses something different for our hobbies, and the choice we make can however affect our mental health. Some hobbies can actually raise our stress and frustration levels, especially worrying about getting something right. The painter that can’t capture the painting they want, or the musician that needs to practice for hours every day. So choosing the right hobby for the right time can help to improve our mental health. Having a mix of relaxing and energetic, mindful and chaotic can all help to ease the stresses and pressures of our lives.  Here are a few hobbies known to benefit mental health:-: * Art Therapy: Engaging in artistic activities such as drawing, painting, or sculpting can promote relaxation and self-expression, which are beneficial for managing stress and improving mood. A study published in the Journal of the American Art Therapy Association found that art therapy can reduce symptoms of anxiety and depression. At 7 Cups we have a dedicated Arts & Crafts Community Here * Gardening: Spending time outdoors and caring for plants has been shown to reduce stress and improve overall well-being. Research published in the Journal of Health Psychology suggests that gardening can promote mood enhancement and stress reduction. Gardening is a topic in Hobby Zone so please post Here * Music Therapy: Listening to or creating music can have a profound impact on mental health by reducing stress, promoting relaxation, and enhancing emotional expression. A systematic review published in the Cochrane Database of Systematic Reviews concluded that music therapy can effectively reduce symptoms of depression. Music and Dance Community Here [https://www.7cups.com/forum/music/]  * Physical Exercise: Engaging in physical activities such as walking, running, or yoga can improve both physical and mental health. Regular exercise has been shown to reduce symptoms of anxiety and depression. We have a Sports & Fitness topic Here * Reading & Writing: Immersing oneself in a good book can provide an escape from everyday stressors and promote relaxation. Research published in the Journal of Clinical Psychology found that reading can be an effective form of stress relief, leading to decreased levels of cortisol, the stress hormone. Reading and Writing Community is Here * Cooking and Baking: Cooking or baking can be a creative outlet that allows individuals to express themselves while also providing a sense of accomplishment. Research has shown that engaging in cooking-related activities can improve mood and increase feelings of happiness. Share your recipes Here [https://www.7cups.com/forum/hobbyzone/FoodRecipestoShare_2652/] or share cooking tips Here  [https://www.7cups.com/forum/hobbyzone/Foodallaboutfood_1139/] * Outdoor Activities: Spending time outdoors and engaging in activities such as hiking, camping, or birdwatching can promote feelings of connection to nature and provide opportunities for physical activity and relaxation. Research suggests that spending time in natural environments can reduce stress and improve cognitive function  One special way to make our hobbies work for our mental wealth more is to ‘mindful hobby’. Using simple mindfulness techniques to improve the benefit of our hobby time. Being present in the moment, concentrating on what we are doing rather than letting our minds race. ------------------------- I hope that this has given you all food for thought,  perhaps you will look for a new hobby, or perhaps you may look at your hobbies in a more respectful way;  they are doing you and your mental health more good than you may realise!

...See more This is Motivational March and so I wanted to discuss with you about your hobbies and what motivates you to get started! Often I find it hard to motivate myself and so I might look at doing other things for a while. If I am in a 'hobby slump' and just want to find another project then that is exactly what I do. So often I might have many 'WIP' work in progress. I also know sometimes I look at all my yarn and knitting needles and groan! I love knitting but sometimes I just want to watch tv! I found my mojo when I wanted a new beanie hat, it was something I could easily knit AND watch tv lol! And, of course I got a warm hat :) So please take a moment to answer the following questions, of perhaps just read and think about them. ? Could you please tell me how you motivate yourself to spend time on your hobbies? ? Which hobby do you feel motivates you the most? ? Which hobby do you find the most rewarding? An amazing song I once heard (I can't remember where)

...See more Disclaimer: I did not write this, I just remember the poem that this really cute song was made from 💜 (I wish I was that good of a writer!) Especially now, I choose to believe,  I choose to have hope in this world I see; I know together we can find a way To make tomorrow a better day! Dark clouds will come, dark clouds will go,  Cold rain will fall, cold winds will blow,  But the shining sun - it's here to stay; Let's make tomorrow a better day!  Just one little seed - think what it could become, A mighty forest standing tall in the sun; If we stand together, they'll hear what we say; Let's make tomorrow a better day!

...See more TRIGGER WARNING: VIOLENCE/WAR * * * I'll never forget that morning,  My sister woke me up and she was screaming,  There was a look of fear on her face. "Wake up, you need to see this!" Though I was barely awake,  I knew that this was something major.  My sister sat down on my bed and said,  "I think this is the start of an invasion." All I could think of were the nights I prayed that it wouldn't come to this, The families whose lives were changed forever, And promises our leaders didn't keep.  I watched the bombs fall on my hometown,  My heart breaking every time I watched the news.  How can those people sleep at night After destroying Mariupol? I'll never forget the air raid sirens That preceded so much pain and devastation. I'll never forget the courage of Ukraine,  And everyone I loved and lost in this invasion.

Do you like to color?

...See more Does anyone like to color when they are feeling stressed? When the adult coloring books first came out, I bought a whole bunch (at that time, I worked at a place where I get employee discount with purchases). Now I have a good collection of them sitting on my cupboard, some I've started coloring with, others, I've just left it. Instead, I downloaded a coloring app on my phone, which I color everyday. I know it's different than having real color pencil in hand and filling in the lines of a picture, but it still somehow gives me a sense of satisfaction from every picture I choose to color (fill-in-the-space).  I read an article recently, saying that coloring is good for our health. It helps us practice mindfulness and relieves stress. Below is the article, if anyone is interested in reading it: https://www.mayoclinichealthsystem.org/hometown-health/speaking-of-health/coloring-is-good-for-your-health#:~:text=It%20calms@20the%20brain%20and,coloring%20session%20holds%20great%20value For anyone who is interested in Interior Design and coloring, I recommend a book, titled "Farmhouse Styles: Interior Design Coloring Book Adults Relaxation and Stress Relief" by "Stella Rose". What do you like to color? Patterns? Animals? Landscape scenes? Mandalas? Flowers? Birds? Buildings?.. etc.

...See more I love nature super much and really enjoyed watching Bear Grylls's shows and his books when i was young. Unfortunately, I did not get any opportunities so far, and there aren't any natural places around me for wild explorations. But exploring nature has always been my dream. I'd like to go deep diving and see all the sea creatures and I'd love to learn things academically about them. Do you guys love nature, too?

Fun and Free Summer Hobbies for Everyone!
by Mya000
Last post
August 21st, 2023
...See more Hey fellow hobbyists, Summer is in full swing, and it's the perfect time to explore exciting activities that won't break the bank! Of course, the availability of these hobbies might vary depending on where you live, but fear not, as I've got some awesome suggestions to suit different locations. Let's dive in and make the most of this sunny season without spending a dime! Nature Walks: Whether you're near a forest, park, or beach, nature walks are a fantastic way to connect with the outdoors. Breathe in the fresh air, listen to the birds singing, and appreciate the beauty of your surroundings. Stargazing: If you live in an area with clear skies, try stargazing at night. Lay back and identify constellations or watch out for shooting stars. All you need is a comfortable spot away from city lights. Outdoor Sports: Gather some friends or family and organize a friendly game of soccer, basketball, frisbee, or even a nature scavenger hunt. It's an excellent way to stay active and have fun together. You can also engage in individual outdoor activities like shooting hoops, practising soccer skills, or going on a solo nature scavenger hunt. It's a chance to challenge yourself and have fun alone. Gardening: Cultivate a green thumb by starting a small garden. Even if you have limited space, you can grow herbs, flowers, or potted plants. Gardening is not only rewarding but also a great stress reliever. DIY Crafts: Get creative indoors on scorching days with DIY crafts. Upcycle old items, create handmade cards, or explore origami. The possibilities are endless, and it's an enjoyable way to spend your time. Picnics: Treat yourself with a picnic in a nearby park or even your backyard. Pack some homemade snacks and enjoy a leisurely afternoon outdoors. You can also invite friends or family to spend some quality time together. Local Events: Keep an eye on local community calendars for free events like concerts, art exhibitions, or outdoor film screenings. These events offer a great opportunity to engage with your community and discover new interests. Cycling: If you have a bicycle, explore your neighbourhood or nearby trails. Cycling is not only fun, but also an eco-friendly way to get around. Photography: Capture the beauty of summer through photography. You don't need an expensive camera; your smartphone will do just fine. Experiment with different angles and subjects to improve your skills. Remember, the best hobbies are those that bring joy and fulfilment to your life. Don't hesitate to try something new, and if you live in a place with unique opportunities, share your suggestions with others. Happy hobbying and have a fantastic summer!
