Skeleton Outlines for Writing Faster

ouiCherie August 29th, 2021

Hello Writers,

I'm aware outlining is boring, and I'm guilty for this too, but the truth is, it helps us write faster. The Skeleton Outlines is one of the methods that we can use for almost any type of writing as needed. If you have never heard about it, let alone used it, feel free to read on.

How Does it Help?

  1. Research conducted in a structured manner. I'm sure you know too well how easy it is to end up wasting time browsing the net while researching for 'anything' related?
  2. Having an outline keeps us from deviating too far from what we originally wanted to discuss.
  3. The skeleton is your framework, so you can jump between main ideas to flesh it out, as you already have the, well, bones.

How Does it Look?.

Let's say you want to write about "Hidden Low Self-Esteem." Your skeleton outlines maybe look like this:

Introduction about self-esteem

I. Self-Esteem and Mental Health

❍ Idea 1

❍ Idea 2, and so on.

II. Common Signs of Low Self-Esteem

❍ Idea 1

❍ Idea 2, and so on.

III. Hidden Signs of Low Self-Esteem

❍ Idea 1

❍ Idea 2, and so on.

IV. First Steps to Fix Self-Esteem Issue

❍ Idea 1

❍ Idea 2, and so on.

Have you used the Skeleton Outlines method before? If yes, any other input or tips, perhaps? If not, do you think this will help your writing?

Have you used the Skeleton Outlines method before? Yes, A similar idea in school. I'm a very visual learner so I'd prefer to draw pillars, repersenting claims/ideas. Inside would be detailing like smaller claims and quotes. Supporting the pillars would be the ground and ceiling, my intro/conclusion or biggest ideas.

How do you find the CMD Program so far? I think it's going great! I like the "Requiremnts and Overview List" google doc, it's very detailed and walked me through everything i need to do.

@ouiCherie Cherie, such an amazing post! I love this technique. Always helps me with a 'blank page' situation. Having the plan helps to start writing as I build around the skeleton. You explained the technique so well, I hope our writers will enjoy trying it out 💜

Have joyful writing
everyone!

Yes I have used this skeleton method before, and even to this day I use it. I learnt about this method in my high school when we were required to structure our answers as per the questions and sub questions according to the marks. It is very helpful in sticking to the point, not increasing the word limit and stops from deviating from the core topic. Even if you sit clueless about a topic, once you chalk out a skeleton, it becomes quite easy to conduct research for facts and materials. It also helps in remembering the facts alongwith helping in saving time.
