Gratitude is important because when we think about what we have to be grateful for, we can see that life is not 100% bad.  There are some things that are good, and we can think about why those good things are there - where did they come from, who is responsible for them, etc.

@amiablePeace77    this is very true. not seeing the things you've been given in your life, or not being thankful for those gifts and blessings can harden your heart. but it is also possible that being grateful inside, but unwilling to share how grateful you are can also have people precieve you as ungrateful, and can have damaging affects all directed towards you.

Considering that an inability to feel gratitude is one of the marks of sociopathy, & that that inability stems from a permanent lack of empathy & feeling no real connection with other humans (from which sociopaths' well-known penchant for manipulative & damaging behaviors)...yes, I would agree with your initial premise.
