It's a blessing for parents to have a child that is taking care of them when they age and need it. Being able to stay at home and getting care there can make elderly feel much more comfortable provided of course it is possible and not too much strain on you. As a caregiver there can be a lot to learn in the beginning and it might feel kind of scary so it's good that you have a nurse at your side. A good self-care routine is essential to keep yourself balanced as a caregiver. This is a link for our sub-com family & caregivers https://www.7cups.com/home/familyandcaregivers/

My almost 83yo mother lives with us. She is on oxygen and has severe mobility issues (heavily dependent on a walker just around the house, wheelchair/scooter when out). Her mind is mostly sharp; her hearing is failing (but don't tell her that!); she has her social security, but it isn't even close to supporting her.

I feel honored to be able to take care of her the way she took care of me as a child. She's not a burden, she is a blessing. Yeah, some days are hard; but 99.99% of the days are fine and she is safe, clean, warm, etc. I don't have to worry about her not eating properly, getting showered, falling over her dog, or whatever because she is here. And even though I work out of the house 4 days a week, we have stay-at-home neighbors who could be here in an instant in an emergency and we are only 10 minutes away ourselves.

Good luck to you on your journey with your parents. Cherish your time with them. Talk to them about when you were a kid or they were young. Remember family with them.
