Alzheimer's and Hospice

littleDog8604 December 15th, 2022

I just learned yesterday that my aunt is not doing well, is not able to care for herself anymore and is not getting better and she's being put in hospice. I also learned yesterday that she has Alzheimer's as well. I'm feeling down about it all.

I'm sorry. It's hard when our older loved ones age. The transition from being able to take care of oneself to suddenly not is not easy for them or us. My mother went into the nursing home during the pandemic and mentally declined rapidly too. I've learned that arguing with her about her delusions just makes her not trust me and I try to change the topic if she has scary delusions. Sometimes living in a fantasy world isn't all that bad as she thinks she's a millionaire, but then at Thanksgiving she thought I was a fake and that her real daughter was dead.

All we can do is be there for them during this end stage of life. Sometimes it can be scary, but I occasionally see joy on Mom's face and it warms my heart to remember her as she used to be.

Good luck to you and your aunt.

@littleDog8604 My aunt started showing signs about a year ago. She is declining very quickly. She is becoming more difficult to assist since she gets fits of rage and insists that she can take care of herself... but she can't. She doesn't take her medications, won't eat if someone doesn't feed her, etc. etc. We have been trying to convince her to let a care professional visit her for a few hours each day to help her out, but she won't have it. She expects my mother and other sister to help her with everything... but they have their own health issues, responsibilities and have already been told by their doctors that they can't take on that kind of stress and responsibility. Her sons are ready to stick her in a nursing home, but she won't accept that the only other option she has is to let us hire a professional care assistant for her.
It is killing me to see how hard this is for my mother. She just lost her husband (my father) and her mother (my grandmother) not too long ago. Her own health is on the line & I'm worried that my aunt might harm her since her fits of rage are getting so much worse.

@Brittanny17 Thank you. My family and I have been processing so many losses that my grief about the situation with my aunt was something I had not yet had a chance to acknowledge/address.

@lttleDog8604 I'm sorry, I didn't mean to highjack your thread as the place to come to this realization. But thank you for helping bring this to light as one of the things I do need to process sooner than later.
