As we begin the New Year, we find ourselves reflecting on the past year's accomplishments and challenges. We take time to reflect on our goals and set New Year's resolutions to support those changes we want to see and we focus on setting our intentions for the upcoming year.

Why you should prioritize mental health this year

One of the most common goals people set for themselves is focusing on their physical health.  For some people, this means signing up for the gym or setting up a workout schedule. For others, it means starting a new diet or taking a break from alcohol after all the holiday parties.  However, what most people don’t focus on is their mental wellness. Typically, we don’t seek support or make changes to our mental health until there is a problem. The great news is, you don’t have to wait until there is a ‘problem’, in fact, if you focus on a self-care plan that includes finding balance between your mind, body, and soul, you likely will be proactive in preventing your mental well-being from deteriorating to the point of it being ‘problematic’.

Self-care can feel like a selfish word to some people, but the reality is, self-care is far from selfish, it is actually necessary for your mental well-being.

Think back to the last time you flew somewhere and the flight attendant was going over all of the safety procedures. Do you remember what they tell you to do in case of emergency and the oxygen masks deploy?  They will tell you to put your mask on before you attempt to help anyone else. The reason is simple, you aren’t going to be any help to others if you don’t take care of yourself first. Just imagine that scenario for a second, still think self-care is selfish?

How to improve your self-care habits

We live in a fast paced society where people are on the go more than ever. We are torn in a million different directions all day long, giving our time, energy, patience, love, support and resources to others. If we don’t stop to refill our own cup, we aren’t going to have anything left to give. If you try to drive a car without gas, you likely won’t get too far and could even damage the car if you try. Your body responds the same way. We may not be aware of our stress levels sometimes because we are on auto-pilot just trying to get through the busy day. We may not be aware that we need a break or that we should say no to one more commitment. When we are acting mindlessly, we aren’t aware of very much. The more you can practice mindfulness, the more aware you will be of your needs. The more aware you are of your needs, the better prepared you are when you need to set boundaries, take a break or take time for self-care.
