AI-Enabled Laughing Robots are No Joke
by calmDew1576

...See more Laughter is a nonverbal vocal expression that plays an important role in social situations and transcends cultural boundaries. Artificial intelligence (AI) machine learning is rapidly being explored as a powerful tool to enable robots to interact with humans for a variety of purposes. A new study published in Frontiers in Robotics and AI unveils a shared laughter generation AI system that enables a robot to share a laugh with a human for greater perceived empathetic conversational interaction. The three AI models that comprise the solution were a laugh detector, a shared laughter predictor, and a laugh type selector. ERICA is also capable of non-verbal communication such as eye gaze, gestures, and nodding the head. The participants tried to get to know each other via friendly dialogue lasting 10-15 minutes. The laughter detection model is an AI recurrent neural network. The positive samples that were identified by the laughter detector model were then further labeled as shared laughter if ERICA responded with laughter in a timely manner to the initial user laugh. This resulted in over 260 shared laughter samples that were then annotated by the laugh type selector as either mirthful or social laughs. The laughter type selector used the identical logistic regression model as the shared laughter predictor. ā€œThe proposed system improved the impression of the dialogue system such as empathy perception compared to a naive baseline without laughter and a reactive system that always responded with only social laughs.ā€ Source: https://www.psychologytoday.com/us/blog/the-future-brain/202209/ai-enabled-laughing-robots-are-no-joke How important do you think non-verbal communication is? #Laughter #Empathy #Communication #AI

Should We Stop Talking About Student Loan "Forgiveness"?
by professionalVision2624
Last post
January 26th
...See more KEY POINTS * Debt is often stigmatized, and this may be one reason for opposition to President Biden's student loan relief program. * Debt is a normal, encouraged economic behavior in our society and shouldn't be discussed in moralistic terms. * One suggestion for changing the conversation around debt is to stop calling it loan "forgiveness," which implies debt is a "bad behavior." Source: Alexander Mils/Unsplash "Debate continues on President Bidenā€™s student loan relief plan [https://www.whitehouse.gov/briefing-room/statements-releases/2022/08/24/fact-sheet-president-biden-announces-student-loan-relief-for-borrowers-who-need-it-most/]: the cancellation of up to $20,000 in debt for Pell Grant recipients and up to $10,000 for all others who now earn less than $125,000 per year. Critics of this proposal argue that President Biden lacks the legal authority to cancel the debt, that it funnels too much money to people who donā€™t really need it, or that it could increase inflation and taxes. Iā€™m not a policy wonk, and I have no idea whether these things are true. But others have suggested a behavioral effect to student loan relief, and thatā€™s where I can step in and call people on their nonsense. * ā€œIt distorts incentives and encourages behavior that contributed to the ā€˜problemā€™ that it seeks to address.ā€ (from Newsweek) * ā€œIt discourages sacrifice and good behavior.ā€ (from the John Locke Foundation) * ā€œIt rewards bad behavior.ā€ (from Forbes) Debt has probably been stigmatized since about five minutes after the first loan in human history, and some continue to characterize debt as "bad behavior." This moralistic thinking muddies legitimate discussion about whether, why, and how we should eliminate debt. To address this issue, I offer a modest proposal: Stop calling it debt ā€œforgiveness [https://www.psychologytoday.com/us/basics/forgiveness].ā€ Debt Stigma Humansā€”being relatively slow, small, and weak within the animal kingdomā€”quickly learned that cooperation [https://www.psychologytoday.com/us/basics/teamwork] is our only means of survival and evolutionary success. Thus, weā€™re finely attuned to concepts of reciprocity and fairness. The Code of Hammurabi (approx. 1750 B.C.) lays out rules for loan repayment and debt relief. The Torah, Bible, and Quran all discuss debt. Itā€™s perhaps unsurprising, then, that people who carry debt are often targets of shame [https://www.psychologytoday.com/us/basics/embarrassment] and scorn. Despite our societal expectations and economic demands that people attend college, student debt is still subject to this stigma. If youā€™ve been paying attention [https://www.psychologytoday.com/us/basics/attention] to the news, you know that people with outstanding student loans are often called irresponsible for taking on too much debt, failing to pay it back promptly, or both. Moreover, only 41 percent of Americans support complete student debt relief [https://www.ipsos.com/en-us/news-polls/npr-student-loan-forgiveness-2022], with that figure far lower among people without student loans. Yet it was reported last summer that 63 percent of Americans support free public college [https://www.pewresearch.org/fact-tank/2021/08/11/democrats-overwhelmingly-favor-free-college-tuition-while-republicans-are-divided-by-age-education/]. Although the endgame here is the sameā€”college degrees with zero debtā€”I would argue that the 22 percent of Americans who seemingly would make college free proactively but not cancel student debt retroactively is due, at least in part, to debt stigma. And debt stigma can have far-reaching implications for well-being, with some going so far as to suggest that individuals with debt donā€™t deserve to live. The General Social Survey, an annual, nationally representative survey of Americansā€™ attitudes on all sorts of things, has often included this question: ā€œDo you think a person has the right to end his or her own life if this person has gone bankrupt?ā€ The fact that someone even thought this was a pertinent question tells you a lot about debt stigma, but so, too, does the fact that endorsement of this item almost doubled between 1983 and 2014 (from 6.6 percent to 12.1 percent). This fact may be the ultimate indication that debt is far too entrenched in terms of ā€œrightā€ and ā€œwrong.ā€ Read the full available article at Psychology Today [https://www.psychologytoday.com/us/blog/nudging-ahead/202209/should-we-stop-talking-about-student-loan-forgiveness] Reflection: What are your thoughts on student debt and the student loan relief plan? #StudentLoan #ReliefPlan #Debt #Stigma

Leadership Spotlight: JustSophia
by Heather225
Last post
December 11th, 2024
...See more This month we celebrate a very inspirational Quality Mentor, @JustSophia! From the nominator: Sophia is a diligent and dedicated leader who always puts forth her best effort. Whether you ask for help or she notices that you're struggling, Sophia is quick to offer her assistance. She possesses great patience and wisdom while remaining open-minded and able to tackle any challenge. Her kind and friendly demeanor makes her a pleasure to work with, and I am very proud of her. Here are a few more shoutouts: "Sophia, I'm so proud of you for everything you've accomplished so far on Cups. It's be a great opportunity to watch you grow into the incredible listener that you are. I look forward to seeing where you go from here." - AnnaS "JustSophia is an absolutely fantastic listener and Quality Mentor.Ā They are really kind, smart and empathetic and truly have a heart of gold.Ā I feel that they truly believe this spotlight, their contributions to our community is wonderfully wonderfulĀ šŸ˜ŠāœØĀ Thank you for all the amazing work you do here on Cups, SophiaĀ ā¤ļø" - IA "Sophia, your passion for our community is noticeable in your thoughtful approach to quality. I see you proactively mentoring listeners and being such an incredible support in the forums. You are without a doubt an extraordinary leader. Thank you for all you do!" - Glen Now for a Q&A with Sophia! What motivates me to be a volunteer: I became a Listener at 7 cups because I find it rewarding to help others, and I felt like I could contribute something positive. Iā€™ve found that connecting with so many people and offering support in such a variety of ways has been very meaningful. My proudest 7 cups achievement: What pops immediately to mind is not really a single achievement, but rather being a part of othersā€™ achievements. Facilitating any chat where someone has an ā€œah-hah!ā€ moment is the greatest achievement I think I could have. Advice: I would say to be honest, forthright, and to communicate clearly (but in a non-confrontational way) Leaders I admire: I admire @Jenna because she has always been welcoming and supportive, and sheā€™s always made herself available to answer whatever questions anyoneā€™s ever had. She can offer information about anything related to this site and uses this expertise to help others develop their own knowledge and skills. She knows so much and has continued to be a source of support and seemingly endless knowledge throughout my time here. I would be thrilled to know half of what Jenna does. Sometimes someoneā€™s leadership doesnā€™t have to be public. Someone can be a leader one on one by being a role model and helping another person to learn and grow. I admire @AnnaSilverberg for this reason. In addition to her positive presence in places like the Listener Support Room, her willingness and ability to support me in exploring challenging issues has helped me to become a better leader and supporter. I believe that such attentiveness and ability to help others grow is part of being a great leader. Whatā€™s next: I really donā€™t know whatā€™s next on my 7 cups journey. I like being available to offer support whenever and wherever someone needs me, so that may lead me to explore additional roles. I like learning, problem-solving, developing my skills, and taking on new challenges. That may lead me to explore greater leadership opportunities. I like exploring how things work. I like research. I like mentoring others. I like just offering support through listening. Thatā€™s what motivated me to become a Listener at 7 cups, and itā€™s still the core of what it means to be here. If I ā€œjustā€ stayed in my current roles, thatā€™s ok too. Ultimately it comes down to how I can contribute the most. Dealing with challenges: Iā€™m not sure if you mean biggest challenges at 7 cups, or biggest challenges in general. I suppose both involve getting active support ā€“ talking through things to figure out my thoughts and next steps (can you tell why I appreciate the listening process?). Sometimes it involves accepting the things I donā€™t like. I donā€™t have to like them, but fighting them - either internally or externally - is a waste of energy. Iā€™m not very good at that one a lot of times, but when I succeed at it, thatā€™s a major way I can get through some tough things. Other than that, it depends on the challenge. A lot of times it involves accepting the help and guidance of those who are better equipped than I am to deal with whatever is going on. Sometimes, when things are very difficult to do, it involves reminding myself of my values and my commitment to living up to them. Sometimes, frankly, it involves skills that Iā€™ve learned in lots of years of therapy. It all depends on what Iā€™m trying to face. ā€” Please join me in giving congrats to Sophia!

...See more Participating in community has given so many people extra confidence, lot of support and also helped them in making new friends. That's all from my side... And yes I'm available for you always

In our resources section you can find application links and the leaders of each community. Feel free to join in on building our 7 Cups community!

ā¢Notify @CheeryMango if your team's application or leaders have changed

ā¢Notify @CheeryMango if you would like to move your project into "on hold"
