It's hard to shake emotions, and when we fight how we feel, it only intensifies. It's ok if you need to set aside a specific amount of time for destress-don't-talk-to-me time at the end of the day. Doing something fun and relaxing as soon as you get home for even just fifteen minutes might be enough to take the edge of you. It's you-time, because you deserve it!

There are several things I do. Not all work every day but I only need one to work. :) I do something to relax before I head home such as grab a coffee and drink it on my ride home, only thinking about that coffee and how it tastes, the warmth, the smoothness. Then when I get home I am greeted by my family and start thinking of them. It's easier to transition from coffee to home than work to home. Besides coffee, I might just sing in the car very loudly, or go for a very fast run in a park before I get home. A friend of mine touches the tree outside of his house and imagines all the thoughts and worries, anger, stress goes from him and into the tree, then when that is done he enters his house and deals with family life. Sometimes I think, in 10 years from now who is going to care about the choices I made in this job today? What I do does not make much of an impact anyways, so why do I care so much anyways? What really matters is my family not my job.

Unfortunately is not something that will disappear from one place to the other- we carry it with us as you would have carried something that bothered you from personal life to work. The key here is to focus on the next steps: for example, before you finish work and go home, you prepare mentally and think of the things to look forward to or things you will be doing (catching up with family- cooking- going to the gym- watching a movie) then you will prepare your thoughts to be there before you go.

I use a variation of "don't go to bed angry" from marriage. At work, if my termination time or leave time is, let's say 4PM, if work allows me to have a 15 minute wind down, I try to do that, to process with people I work with. If they do not, then I try to do the wind down and process after work and before I depart. This goes back to some advice I hold very dear; always know you deserve time to yourself, even if it's 5 minutes in a bathroom or 15minutes for a short walk.

Sometimes it has to be a conscious choice to leave work at work; as difficult as that may be. Remember that you "work to live". You don't "live to work" in spite of what some corporate entities might bully (...and I don't believe that bully is too harsh of a word...) their employees into believing. People are people; not robots!

That is so hard! Especially if you have a computer or phone that comes home with you. I find that turning off you email notifications and leaving my lap top at work helps.

Separating your private life from work is really important. Always try to focus on work when u are in work and focus on your private life when you are out of work.

Removing yourself from the work environment, is helpful. I have an office space where I work. This has helped me to keep all the stresses in that room. I also take advantage of the other listeners if need be.
