Maybe try out groups outside school, sports clubs, social clubs, do your online school in coffee shops and talk to a stranger. No one wants to feel lonely, there are more people that are in that situation than you think.

I have found that the best friends I have made I have met through hobbies and interests, not through school or work. So get out there and find something that you love to do! It could be sport, something creative, whatever floats your boat! Also, remember that quality is more important than quantity - I truly believe it's better to have one friend you can truly talk to rather than 50 who might contact you once a year, probably on FaceBook, because Facebook has told them it's your birthday!

Join community groups, try an online hobby site such as Meetup dot com, volunteer, or join interest clubs. Some churches also offer volunteer groups. Examples: Volunteering for an animal shelter or homeless shelter, joining a club where everyone likes your interests (fishing, photography, art, dance, gaming, etc.). You can also start your own club and advertise it. Websites are fairly easy and free to make from sites such as Wix. You can email schools to let them know about the clubs. Most online schools also offer clubs that meet in person as well.

Online is a great avenue to meet new people if you are of a mature age. sometimes working very hard in school can make socializing hard. However, school is cool and meeting new people can occur by starting a study group or just reaching out to a classmate to see if you share common interests.

Online school can feel very isolating, so try doing some other things to meet people and make friends? Some good things I have done to meet friends have been to join social media (Tumblr, Twitter, Facebook, etc), I have a Discord account that I've been able to meet people on and join Dungeons and Dragons groups and play games. Even though none of these are "in person" things, they can still help you meet lovely people! If you're wanting an in person social activity I HIGHLY suggest checking out the app "MeetUp".. you put in your location and it tells you social events in your community (or whatever community you choose) that you can go to also and meet new people!

I'm also doing an online program at the moment. It can be tough to make friends since there's no face-to-face class time, or hanging out on campus, but many online programs have systems in place to help their students connect and meet. For instance, at my school, every course has an a "Student Lounge" forum that allows students to chat about extracurricular interests, set up study groups, and meet up at a location that is convenient for them. I've found that joining my school's Facebook page has been particularly helpful, as there are people within my city who are also in the program, so we've been able to meet up, discuss our common interests, network, and hang out.
If you're looking for friends outside of school, you can look for programming or fun classes through your local community centres or libraries, volunteer opportunities at organizations that interest you, local events, or other such opportunities. As ZenGarden77 mentioned, the people there will, at the very least, share a few common interests with you, so they'll be prime candidates for friendship.
I hope this gave you a few ideas!

Onlind schooling has its pros. And with regards to socialisation and making friends, it's good that you ask, as that's something we need also. You could try out doing volunteer work, which would be of benefit to you in several ways, such as getting to meet many people and finding friends. See if there's something you can do in the community or search on the net. You could even start up your own group and let people know. You'll find many like-minded people if you join a group or a club e.g. book club etc.

I had a similar situation to yours, I still sort of do. I don't have many friends, only one close one. What I do is I go to the homeroom(In my school it's basically a skype/chatroom, you don't see anyone, only typing.) and if I see someone talking about a topic I enjoy, I webmail them(Webmail is basically an email, but specifically for my school) and I tyr to start talking to them, if they don't reply, or if we talk and then fade out, I know it wasn't a meaningful friendship, and I let it go, and move on. I only have had one of these(My now friend). I hope this works out for you. I also came to 7 Cups as some of the members on here are great people!

Although I've always gone to school in real life I've moved schools often and have hence had to make friends elsewhere. Sports clubs or societies are amazing. Are you into football? If you join your local football team you're sure to make some acquaintances which can quickly turn into friends. Similarly, you could find part-time work or volunteer where you'll be around other people.
If you feel lonely this instant you could try to find a discord related to an interest of yours. I'm a Psychology and neuroscience student so I'm in several related discords. I find that discord is very good as it has a convenient chat feature, I'm sure reddit and similar sites also work well though. Good luck!

Get involved in activities, maybe there are groups for home schooled students. Check if your online school has clubs as well.
