Most people dream for up to 5 hours a night. This can be evidenced by R E M (Rapid eye movement). If you look at someone sleeping and their eyeballs appear to be moving then they're dreaming. Dreaming is your brain's way of clearing out un-necessary thoughts and memories and it consigns them to the part off your brain that doesn't use memory. That's why you can't remember most of them. The only ones you do are those just before waking whilst they are still in your memory. If you are experiencing such dreams try to think of pleasant things before you drift off to sleep. Concentrate on them to the exclusion of all other thoughts. Think of grassy fields under a warm sun with scented flowers by a large lake. peace. Set an alarm clock to wake you up five minutes before your normal rising time. You can always lie in for five minutes then in your warm comfortable bed. Avoid foods with dairy products in them at night, milk, cheese (especially) and butter. Do not drink caffeine based drinks such as tea, coffee or coca cola. Try fruit juice or water or a water based cordial. Try a little light exercise before going to bed that leaves you slightly tired. Put a little lavender inside your pillow. If you have a partner a little gentle sex doesn't do any harm as it relaxes you afterwards. Do all these and you should have a good night's sleep

Recurring dreams are often reflections of what occupies your mind commonly. I used to be scared of hospitals, and even though I didn't think too often about them during the day, I'd have repeating nightmares at night. It's usually something subconscious you're bothered by.

We all have unique lessons to learn in our life and sometimes these lessons are lifelong. Recurring dreams tend to build upon a particular theme and typically change subtly as we grow into a different understanding of ourselves as well as the obstacles we face. Careful scrutiny of the dream content tends to reveal tiny changes to the narrative we would at times like to believe is “exactly the same.” Recurring dreams can be a useful barometer for our own growth and development. Pay attention to the nuances of your recurring dreams as these small changes can offer the greatest lessons.

This may be due to a large amount of stress in your life. I will sometimes go two or three days with the same dream (which is usually terrifying and during which I know I am asleep). Think of ways to reduce your stresses.
