From my experience it was because I had too much on my mind, I couldn't relax. There are number of ways to get to sleep which it includes listening to meditation music, having a bath and lighting a few candles.

Anxiety may be the cause of this, when you have so much on your mind the anxiety gets to much and you can't stop thinking about everything. And you have no noise to distract yourself from these taughts. It's just you and your brain.

its like obsessive compulsion, when we tries to sleep, we will think more, so again trying for sleep...and it will goes on like a cycle.so better not to try for sleep.if not getting sleep. get up and do something else, then sleep when you feels sleepy.

the activities you do before bed could be keeping you up at night. if you listen to busy music or have an intense argument..it could actually make you anxious and prone to thinking more and being more awake.

I can't tell you why this happens, but I can offer an attempt at a solution. It's not easy, but it shares some qualities with meditation. Try and concentrate on something simple. Like a glowing red dot, or a ball. Just that. You'll find that after a second, you won't be able to--your mind will wander, skitter around, you'll be talking to yourself in your head. Don't worry. Don't get frustrated. Come back to the image. Try again. When you fall off it again, just go back to it. It actually takes practice to focus on a single thing. But the more you can do it, the more you can quiet your mind.

well, during the day your full of activities so it keeps your mind busy. While at night your not doing anything to keep your mind busy, your laying in your bed doing nothing. So that's when your mind romes around and you start to overthink. And unfortunately you cant control your thoughts so I would try to journal to get your thoughts out.
