I can't. I need to have a fan on in the room to block out the silence. I cannot sleep without it whatsoever.

Wow how lucky would you be. Count down from 20 to zero but with every count you have to say a positive word that is something you would like to attain. e.g. 20 peace, 19 love, 18 happiness, etc. this occupies your conscious mind and your subconscious tunes out and puts you to sleep.

I have this problem constantly. If I am sleeping alone, I leave my television on. I get paranoid if it's off and I'm alone. When I don't have that option I write in my journal or listen to music until I get sleepy.

Some people find it much easier to sleep in complete silence, while others like background noise. If you're the type that needs noise, you could try a white noise app or putting on a radio softly, or even turning on a noisy fan during warm nights :P

If you think about it, there is always some sort of noise happening. If you listen very closely you may hear the hum of an electronic that is turned off or outside nature if you are close to a window. If you are still unable to sleep, there are many options to bring comforting sounds with you to sleep. You can listen to binaural beats, guided sleep meditation, get a humidifier that let's off a gentle sound as the steam is let out. Think about what kinds of sounds you'd like to hear at night to keep you comfortable. There are so many videos and apps you can download to use!

This is difficult because I personally prefer background noise, it can be helpful in keeping your mind occupied from your thoughts and allowing yourself to relax enough to fall asleep. I think if I wasn't able to have background noise, I would try to make my own in my head. When thoughts go to stressful or overwhelming places, try to shift to a song you like, or to a rhythm that calms you. I know, this is one of those things that is easier said than done. I think it's something that takes practice and patience to be able to do.
