I would say, unfortunately, that it really depends on the individual person. Some people are in professions where they must work long hours or have to be on-call for 24 hrs for an entire week. Of course, this may cause sleep deprivation. But then that person may be very used to waking at odd hours or sleeping fewer hours than most adults do. It also depends on your age - though I don't know why. For me? Lack of sleep becomes a problem when I'm talking to someone but not making sense, like it's very hard for my friend to follow my train of thought. I think too that it can be a problem even though I don't think it is. What I mean is, I might feel great and not feel the need for sleep; but that could be a red flag that my body/brain is going into a manic state. I'm sorry that I don't have a clear answer for you, but it really depends on the individual and what is usually usual for him/her.

We heal when we sleep if you don't sleep its harder for the body to heal. go seek medical advice.

I can't speak for people without a mental illness, but for me at least, sleep deprivation starts to become a problem even if I only missed out on sleep one night. Not sleeping makes it very difficult for me to regulate my mood. This is especially a problem for me as I have Borderline Personality Disorder which means I get mood swings to begin with and Major Depression, both of which means I'm at a high risk of self-harm and suicide even after one night of missed sleep. Unfortunately I also have PTSD which causes me to have frequent nightmares and insomnia that can either make my sleep less restful or prevent me from getting to sleep to begin with. Many of my personal crises have been proceeded by several nights in a row of little or no sleep. I've also stayed awake for 48 hours in a row before, and I know that I could barley function at all at that point, and I know of people with bipolar disorder who have stayed awake for as long as four days and had even more problems. TLDR; Missing any sleep is a problem, especially if it starts to impact your ability to cope with day to day life.

While this can depend on age, overall sleep deprivation becomes a problem when it's causing negative effects on the persons health and/or life. Health wise, a person needs enough sleep in order for their body to perform at its peak condition. When we don't get enough sleep our body does not get the chance to reboot itself, digest food properly, can cloud our minds effecting our judgement, opinions, emotions, etc. It can also lower the strength of our immune system, causing our bodies to be more susceptible to illness. Externally, sleep deprivation can have negative effects at work, school, friendship, and other relationships. I believe statistics show adults get an average of 4-6 hours of sleep a night. It really should be at least 8 hours a night with 6 hours being a minimum.
