I guess this is a personal question, but can one ever be strong enough to resist those urges? Yes, I used to wonder if I would ever feel strong enough to resist those urges on my own and the truth is that after a few years these urges became less and less frequent. At this time of my life, after 9 years clean, I might get an urge only once in a year (if its being a really really tough time) or even less frequent and they are not as nearly powerful as they were before. Its a tough road but it is possible to recover from a self harming addiction.

When you've been self harming a while it's sometimes hard to think of a time where you'll be able to resist the urges completely. I assure you there is hope. It's important to find coping mechanisms that best work for you. Always try new ones and don't lose hope. Put all your effort into trying to resist urges and try to distract yourself when they come along.

It's certainly a difficult thing to accomplish, but I have many friends who have successfully overcome their self harm habit. Know that the longer you go without cutting, the less you will feel the urges to self harm. One day you will be able to say "I don't want to do that to myself anymore".

Short answer: Yes. Long answer: It takes time, but you will. You just have to keep trying, but don't get mad at yourself in you have a relapse. I've never known anyone to recover without having a few mistakes.

I think it possible. Everyone is different so it depends on you. Even though, personally its been over a year since I've self harmed, I still get urges. Just remember that there are ways to cope with the urges and eventually as time goes forward the urgency of self-harm diminishes.
