I often do no harmful exercises like tearing up handfuls of paper, holding ice against my arms, flicking rubber bands, or crushing something like snow. These help release the energy till I'm in a good mindset.

i always say that the first step to recovery is believing that you are worth recovering. so why dont you try to engage in some self love or treat yourself like for example take a nice bubble bath or go to a spa for a day or do your nails or hair or just take a nap do something to care for yourself instead of self harming

Personally I use to get a couple of rubber bands and put them on my wrist. Everytime something upset me or I felt the urge to hurt myself I would pull the bands back and snap them into my wrist a couple of times. It was to subsidise wanting to actually cut my own flesh. It didnt leave scaring, nor did it hurt for more than a few minutes. I thought of it like trying to cut down on a drink, replace one bad habbit with another and evantually it didn't hurt anymore and I realised I no longer needed to feel the pain I had been torturing myself with.

Self-harming is a tough habit to break. It's an outlet for the pain we're feeling inside. A great way to break the habit is to find another way to let that pain out. Perhaps there is a hobby you enjoy or some other activity that you could do when those urges come along. As annoying as it may sound, exercise really is the best option. I'm not a big fan of exercising! I'd rather be watching Netflix! But I've taken up karate and it's an incredible outlet for all of the pain and frustration I feel, while also teaching me self-respect and to value myself. Maybe karate is an option for you?
