Stress and anger are usually the top contenders for triggers, that make people want to self harm. Perhaps it's the stress of every day life, or perhaps anxiety caused by a big event. Sometimes, there's no physical reason for it. If someone's self harmed before, they have a higher chance of going back to it as a coping method, and it could actually end up being pure instinct, rather than something that requires a lot of thought. The important thing to remember, is that those who self harm are not invalidated because of it. Our self harm guide goes through it much more eloquently, and proposes reasons and ways to stop. I changes from person to person, no two people have exactly the Same reason because life affects everyone differently.
I cut because I was stressed and lonely and didn't know how to handle my emotions so I cut to 'release them'

Everyone has a different reason. I think the only way to know for sure is really pay attention to what you are feeling when you feel like cutting and how you feel afterward.

Cutting can happen for so many reasons and are unique to an individual. Two major reasons are; addiction to the process & hurting your self due to self-blame. The third most common reason, and Im not sure why they say third, as it seems quite common to me is that people cut to feel physical pain instead of whatever emotional/mental pain they cannot stop.

Not the case for everyone, but, commonly it's the need to control your own pain. Basically, you're trying to distract from any emotional pain you may be experiencing by creating physical pain to focus on.
