There are a number of ways that effectively stop urges. Drawing something, sucking ice blocks, taking a bath or a shower and just feeling the water on your skin. Talk to a close friend, and pat lots of cute puppies.

Stopping the urges is very hard. But, I have found it very helpful you tell yourself you have already stopped. Just every second you find yourself not doing tell yourself "I don't need this, I've stopped it."
