It can be things like picking your skin, burning yourself (with fire or chemicals) even ruining things you love like cutting all your hair off to harm yourself or to punish yourself can be considered self harm. anything used to hurt yourself is considered self-harm. coping mechanisms such as these are valid, but other forms of expression and venting exist and are healthier alternatives. Please seek professional help if you have the urge to hurt yourself.

Yes! Yes. This is a very serious issue. If you're burning yourself with acid, please understand that there is no shame in finding the appropriate resources to discuss and work on this with. Life is never easy but, regardless of whether it's from how someone else has treated you, from guilt you have about your actions, from a past trauma, or whatever else it may be, self harm is not the answer. Don't get me wrong - I've self harmed plenty, in my life, and engaged in risky behavior time and time again, so I'm not being judgmental. If you're doing this, it doesn't mean that you're some flawed person or that you're not worthy or any of that, it just means that you've got something to work on. So, while I want to be clear that this IS self harm and that it is not a good way to deal with your problems, whatever they may be, I also want to express that it doesn't make you a lesser person and, lastly, that you've got an opportunity to work on this and should work to consider it as such (an opportunity for change) - whether on your own or with the help of someone else.

Absolutely. Doing anything with an intention of bringing harm to yourself is counted as self harm. There's even a thing called digital self-harm. It's sending yourself harmful messages, comments, etc. There's so many different forms of self-harm. I won't list them, but acid does count, yes. If you are struggling with self-harm right now, I'd encourage you to reach out for help. That can be talking with a friend you trust, family member, someone on 7 Cups. Sometimes there may be a need for a professional provider. Considering a therapist, social worker, hotline, etc. That can be a good first step.

Using anything to cause physical (or emotional) pain to yourself is self-harm. There are many alternatives to harming yourself, have you tried any of them out? I know it can be hard, and recovery is a long path with a lot of twists & turns, but sometimes it's the little things that help its progress the most. When I had the urge to self-harm, I would instead hold an icecube in my hand for a few seconds. It gave me the relief I needed without causing injury to myself. It's also important to remember that the urge to self-harm is a temporary impulse, and if you can distract yourself long enough, it will end!
