My boyfriend is depressed right now. We have a long distant relationship and decided to take a break. Is it the right thing thing to do? He says he loves me and cares for me but needs this time to "figure out his head". By giving us a break, is this a good decision?

Hi, I've recently spilt from my long term partner who had depression before we broke up. It had gone on so long and he was not active in seeking treatment and when not happy, he was threatening suicide. Ultimately, it became a save yourself or we both go down situation. I am now seriously struggling as I put so much time into him, I lost me along the way. I lost social circles, friends, hobbies, I can't even remember what I liked. I'm back to basics learning to be me again and it is so hard.
the fact that your bf is proactive in his mental health is really good. Also the fact he wants time may be really good for you as it is so difficult as their partner not to want to help and you don't deserve to loose yourself in this situation or become co-dependant through illness. This is up to you both, but space to find yourself and him to find himself may be a blessing. Who knows what the future holds, but he sounds like a good man who cares enough about you to want to sort himself out. Good luck :)

Absolutely. Mental health can affect a wide variety of things in life, and as it seems you both love each other, this can apply in relationships too. Poor mental health can cause issues in relationships such as stress, anger, and lack of motivation to do things such as go on dates. He truly loves you so he is working on bettering himself for both of you. This way, when you do get to meet up, his mood will be better, allowing him to have more energy to do things. Good mental health also aids in helping to create stable, long lasting relationships that let you both be your best selves, together.

I believe this is a good option. This will give both of you time to figure everything out. This will also help your boyfriend clear his thoughts and head and treat you exactly how you deserve to be treated. When people are depressed, they need to learn how to love and appreciate themselves and find happiness before they can give that to another human being. I know it seems hard and it may not be exactly what you want in the moment, but just know that this is going to be extremely beneficial to your relationship in the long run! Just give it some time. Plus, distance makes the heart grow fonder! :)
