It’s best to explain why/ how you have abandonment issues. If he loved you and wanted to be with you he would understand. Just explain that you can’t just stop having these issues.

He probably feels more upset that he can't help you and that you won't let him than actually being annoyed with you in general. The better response before thinking of giving him space would be asking him directly what you've asked others on here. Let him know what you need when you feel these things, and if you don't know what you need yet, explain to him that you're figuring it out and having his unconditional love through the process will help. I don't know how well you two love or understand each other, but communication really is key in any situation.

I think the more important thing here is for you to start healing your abandonment issues first before pursuing this relationship, or any other for that matter. From personal experience, it's difficult to maintain a healthy relationship if this issue hasn't even started the process of healing yet. Believe me, I've been there. And it's super hard to heal from it because sometimes it just gets triggered seemingly out of nowhere. But with counseling or therapy, and with time, I believe you can do it. As for me, I'm going through counseling for about a year now and it still comes up every now and then. But I do feel like it's getting better, so there's hope. And I know you would be able to do it too, if you so choose.
