The biggest thing you can do is be there for him. The biggest question is, are you willing to wait for him? You need to ask yourself if a relationship with him in the future is worth waiting for. If yes to both, then definitely, wait it out and be there for him. Personally, I had the same thing happen to me a few years ago, I liked this woman very much but she needed help getting through a breakup. I told her I'd be there for her, and in the meantime i focused on my hobbies and my job. Now, we are as happy as we can be. Hope this helps!

He's just split from a girl he loved for 5 years, these things can be extremely painful. He must be going through a lot right now so if you really like him, support his feelings and it doesn't mean you never have a chance with him. He just really needs to heal from his ex.

I would approach the situation with senstivity as well as assertiveness. You might consider letting your friend know that you appreciate that he has shared those feelings with you and you're flattered, but he needs time to heal from his previous relationship and to potentially re-find himself, and you would like to support him through that in the capacity of friend.

I think having to be with someone based on their ability to move on, would possibly start an unhealthy relationship. I do however think that being friends it would be good to show the person how much they mean as a friend and offer support. I would suggest that you talk to the other person and figure out what the needs and wants are of each person before starting a serious relationship with the other person. It would help to identify where each person sees themselves in the relationship and which person they truly have feelings for. I would not be able to provide advice but I would suggest that each person talk.
