If he's truly your best friend, he won't think that you're a weirdo for having a crush on him. Follow your heart in this matter. If you think that he will be okay with it, then just tell him directly. For example: You: "Umm... there's something that I've been meaning to tell you." Him: "What?" You: "I have a crush on you." Him: "Okay." Here's my experience with that: When I confessed to my best friend that I had a crush on him, he didn't think of it as awkward or anything like that. He said that it gave him a self esteem boost. Our dynamic only changed (positively) when he confessed that he was in love with me as well and we started dating soon after. We're still together, and none of this would have happened had I not told him that I had a crush on him.

If this guy is your best friend, his priority should be your feelings regardless if his feelings towards you in these circumstances are mutual. Honesty is always the best option, as it doesn't leave anybody in the dark. He will hopefully appreciate your honesty as may have noticed something had changed in regards to your friendship even if unintentional. Also changing a friendship to a relationship is a big change, something he may not feel ready to do straight away.. or at all. He may value your friendship too much to risk loosing it. If this is the case always talk to each other so you both know where you stand.
