Try to make yourself approachable. If the child feels as if they can talk and confide in you then the trust will develop soon and a healthy relationship through talk can be established.

Do not attempt to establish your role as something significant in their lives. Give them time to get to know you and try to get to know them. Consider them as your new friend that you just met and try to act natural. Remember, NEVER get invovled in the arguments between your significant othef and their child. it is not worth it and they can figure it out without you.
