That's the problem, you're NOT relaxing. This is called heart palpitations caused by anxiety. The worst part is the more you become aware of the symptoms the worse the symptoms gets. And when this happens it's very difficult to be comfortable in your own skin.

It sounds like you are going through a panic attack. A good method to use is to close your eyes, put on some soothing music or a quick meditation. (try youtube, there are some great ones!) Could it be that you're putting pressure on yourself to get out, but something is stopping you? Therefore, maybe anxiety could take place causing the fast beating and it can become hard to catch your breath?
