It's good to validate you emotions, sometimes they seem overpowering, but they are there for a reason, to tell you that you are going the wrong way. You must know sadness and anger, in order to know joy and success. Once you know them all, it is up to you which way you want to go, maybe not easy to control, but you get better at identifying what path your emotions are leading you towards every day. You are feeling sad for a whole day, it becomes the story of your life, you are angry for a long time, it is difficult to get out of. Each night when you sleep is a reset button, sometimes it might take a couple of nights, or maybe praying/meditating will put you at ease before you go to sleep. It is important to know that you cannot get it wrong, you cannot get it done, and you get infinite chances to change where you are headed in your life.

Emotions often take over situations because of how strongly I feel them in my chest, and how hard it is for me to get rid of them once they are there. Sometimes, if I don't express an emotion, it stays with me forever.

This may seem a bit harsh but the answer is simply because you let them. Each one of us has emotions and sometimes they can really get out of hand. I'm certainly guilty of loosing my cool every now and again and doing or saying something I regret, we are human it happens. The important thing to remember is that each one of us is responsible for our emotions, it is our job to make sure they don't blow up. The next time you feel an emotion boiling over try calmly removing yourself from the situation and calming down long before the emotion takes control.
