Yes, often times most people with either depression or sometimes no type of mental illness can feel sad. Its kind of like a cloud hanging above your head for no reason. It happens sometimes, and thats something you can work through.

I have Bipolar Disorder, it's a nasty thing. I have short and long mood swings that vary from super happy to deadly depressed. And the worst thing of all is - most of the time these emotions and feelings don't have any reason at all.
I have cried so many times in front of my boyfriend for no reason it makes me sick at times.
But then I know that he's there for me and the short phase will be over in a moment.

Sadness usually has some kind of trigger or cause, even if we aren't aware of it. Sometimes it can be biological. Sometimes, something in our environment makes us feel a certain way, or certain thought patterns make us feel sad.

You may feel sad for no reason due to low levels of serotonin in the brain. When you have low levels of this chemical you generally feel sad and feel like you have little energy. Exercise can heighten levels of serotonin.

People becomes sad for no reason as we think there is no reason but in reality, there is. It's just because we have lots of concerns and it all mixed up. We have to reorganized our thoughts to realize the reason of this sadness/loneliness. Once we are already aware of this reason (which we were not realizing before), we tend to think next on how to overcome it.
