How many emotions are there and what are they?

There are an infinite number of emotions. There are the big categories such as happy, sad and mad, but there are also sub-categories of each one, such as ecstatic, miserable, enraged. And even those can be broken up into more specific categories. While there probably is a finite number of emotions, for practical reasons, it's pretty reasonable to say there are an endless amount of emotions, and words to describe each and every single feeling you're feeling. Even words that aren't typically used to describe feeling can actually end up describing feeling, such as the word catty. Catty isn't an actual emotion, but it can be used to describe how you're feeling at the time, which would usually mean something along the lines of irritable or impulsive. And that's just the English language. Other cultures and other languages associate feelings to different words and meanings. It's really just interpretive, and deals with that the person thinks they're feeling.

This is something that's a little difficult to answer in a small text box with limited time.

There is a huge list of human emotions that we are capable of experiencing. However often times we only experience a very limited number of emotions. I would not be able to list them all.

There is Love - hate, pride - jealousy, enjoyment - despair, courage - fear, and depression. So a total of 9, reason for the hyphens is that there is a spectrum of each category and in each category depending on the intensity we have subcategories. Things like stubbornness, obsession, and surprise occur when the main emotions change like a dial from hatred to love.

I think from a fairly theoretical standpoint the basic emotions are anger, fear, happiness, sadness, disgust, maybe surprise. All other emotions we might feel - like feeling frustrated, nervous, glad - are variations or combinations of those basic, core emotions. It's like colors - the primary colors of red, yellow, and blue can be used to create the entire spectrum of the rainbow. So there's a whole spectrum of emotions to experience.

Emotions are pretty limitless because they are highly personal. They are limited only by our vocabulary and, in English, that vocabulary is pretty huge! You can google massive lists of emotions (which is actually something I recommend, as it can help you to identify your own) and find there are many many subtle variations between seemingly synonymous words.

Emotions are infinite, just like numbers. There is an infinite diversity in feeling between sad and happy, just like there is an infinite amount of numbers between 1 and 0. We feel differently, that makes the rainbow of feelings we experience eternally changing and growing and evolving.

As many as the shades of colour as colours chance in different lighting. As many as waves in the sea, some but ripples, some can surf and some dump and crush you. As many as there are unique minds multiplied by unique situations. Too many to count or name.
