Don't let your emotions consume you. Acknowledge each emotion you are feeling in that moment and embrace it.

Emotional regulation exercises from DBT really help me. keeping a diary card of impulses and emotions throughout the day is part of it. Also, mindfulness exercises really help ground me when done regularly. They can be found on here and on Youtube and other parts of the net. Going for a walk and nature therapy all contribute to my well being. I also use essential oils and lavender, vanilla, and cinnamon help. I put them on my pulse points mixed with a carrier oil or put it in my diffuser. Holistic healing is the direction I want to go in helping me with my emotional problems but I also take medicine for bipolar 2 disorder. I have a therapist that I can process things with too. When I get angry I go for a walk. When I feel my emotions are out of control, I put on new age music and work on my jewelry that I make. I can get a lot done and I can think things out and use my hands in a positive way. I have empathy for people going through the same thing so I come on here sometimes to listen to people that need an ear although as a member I can take advantage of the many resources offered to me too. I'm so glad to find this site to give me hope, skills, and contact with people who help just by being there.

Emotions are meant to be dealt with from time to time. It is not advisable to keep your emotions to yourself and not express yourself. This is because this emotions will build up in you and it will start to resurface and it is too much for you to handle. It is always good to give yourself some me time to deal with the emotions you go through.

What I personally do to stop being overwhelmed by my emotions, and that are actually helpful to a lot of other people is to try to be truly present again. You can achieve that state of "being here" by doing all kind of meditations. A lot of these are actually way easier than you would think. You can try to be mindful of your own body (body scan meditation) by focusing on your feelings. You can focus on your breath, especially by doing breathing exercises. The 12345 grounding technique allows you to focus on your surroundings. A lot of guided meditation resources exist on the internet, and informations on the methods previously listed!

You basically can't until you learn how to control them. Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) is a useful source for some people to handle overthinking. You have to keep in mind though, not everybody is the same and not every therapist is right for you. Another thing that you can try is mindfulness methods or basic meditation. Because what is exhausting is not the thoughts that you can't control but the negative thoughts that you hooked over and over again. Being mindful is making you more aware of the present moment with present thoughts, not the ghosts from past or future worries.
