Isolation occurs when you are completely alienated from people. You are alone in the sense that no one else is with you. However loneliness is when you are alone even when you are in a room full of people.

Loneliness is the feeling and isolation is the fact. You can be isolated, but not feel alone. Loneliness is the way your brain has to tell you that you should do something about your actual state (emotions are the way your brain tells you that you should do something: hunger->eat, fear->protect yourself, pain->your tissues are being harmed... but the brain can sometimes base his asumptions in wrong information and puts you those emotions without a solid reason, that's why there are fat people, people with anxiety, etc). So loneliness is your brain telling you that you need to do something about your isolation, but isolation is not always a bad thing.

isolation refers to the absolute rejection of contacts with other. it is like confined in a room with high walls with no way out. Loneliness refers to the lack of companionship that gives comforts. Lonely people can still have friends and get in touch with people around them. But such contacts still do not bring them the comfort.

These two terms may intersect in many meaning, but there is a huge difference in one aspect. The major difference is the association with positive and negative meanings. Loneliness is a negative term. It means that a person is suffering and has shortage in social interaction. When someone is lonely, he/she is not having enough social interactions and is feeling needing for more. isolation, on the other hand, does not have a negative or positive attribute to it. I person can isolate himself because he/she wants to be alone for a while. nothing wrong with that.

isolated is a more physical thing, you isolate yourself, other people isolate you, its the act of being forced to be alone, I used to isolate myself when I was younger in order to avoid my father. Loneliness is a feeling, you can not be isolated when talking to other people, but you can be lonely. you arent physically alone, but you feel emotionally alone. Isolation normally leads to loneliness, but doesn't have to be, and loneliness is not always a symptom of isolation.
