I'd say isolation is a cause of loneliness. Like, isolation would come first. It's something that happens to you, whereas loneliness is an emotion, a reaction to being isolated. Isolation is something others would do to you, so it comes "from outside", and loneliness is a feeling inside of you.

Loneliness is a feeling of sadness or distress about being by yourself or feeling disconnected from the world around you. Isolation is being separated from other people and your environment. In other words, loneliness is more of a feeling and isolation is an action.

Isolation feels like a more negative word to me, like when you're being purposefully made to be alone. Loneliness is when you're alone but not necessarily at the fault of anyone else at a time when you don't want to be alone.

You can isolate yourself if you want to be alone for some reason. You can stay away from others online and only talk to people when you have to: such as in the grocery store. You can even move. But loneliness is defined as being unhappy about being alone. It is a negative feeling. You can be isolated and happy, if you like being alone, and you don't feel lonely.

When we are isolated, we are physically/emotionally distanced from people - but this might not be a negative experience. As in, we can be alone without feeling there is something missing or void from us. But when we are lonely, we can have peers around us, but may not necessarily feel connected to them. We want closeness and feel down without it.
