You kind of just know, I suppose. There's this feeling that you don't belong in the body of the gender you were born as, and rather the opposite gender. You may feel dysphoric in your body as well.

you may feel like you aren't being who you are meant to be, like something in you is different in you rather than from someone else. Not like hairstyle or shoes, but that your life isn't how you want it to be. You should be able to be comfortable in your own skin, as you, and not as the wrong gender.

Most people feel that the gender that they were born, isn't what they were meant to be born as. Some have described it as feeling like they're not in their own body, like they're meant to be in a female or males body and generally feel uncomfortable with the gender they have been given. The definitions of transgender seem to support these claims.

Only you can figure that out. If you were born male or female and you feel like you were meant to be the opposite of what you were than you may become transgender. I don't think that you're transgender until you actually go through the sexual change, but you can start by changing your outside appearance to make yourself more of what you really want to be, like wearing the opposite sex clothes and fixing your hair. Then there is the process of taking hormones. The surgery is the part that every transgender person wants to get to and that just helps fully develop you into the sex that you prefer to be and it does cost a lot of money.
