Sometimes it's the brain's way of dealing with pain, to attach some sort of satisfaction/comfort to it. It can also be a way to deal with guilt.
Of course it is not healthy because the stress from it will still harm the body and reduce one's quality of life.
Seeking comfort in some hurtful thoughts or state of mind can also be a way of dealing with anxiety, a way of escapism.
It can also happen when one is scared of happiness because happiness comes to them with the fear of sorrow when the source of happiness may be temporary.
In any cases it lowers one's quality of life and holds one back from experiencing life to their best and realizing their potential.
i'm worried about my friend's mental health. Everyone views him as rude but no one ever praises him for anything and lash out at him all the time, so he responds. How can I help the situation?

I’m feeling suicidal, but I have no one to talk to. I can’t call any hotlines or anything like that because of my severe social phobia and there doesn’t seem to be anywhere I can chat to someone. Where can I get some help and feel safe doing this?
