I’m concerned I might be depressed but hesitant to seek help since a record of mental healthcare might threaten my chances at becoming a doctor in the future. Am I right to be wary of discrimination?

I think that it is important for you to seek help. This is not just important for becoming a doctor but for your life in general. Try talking to someone you trust and tell them how you feel. It's illegal to discriminate against people on grounds of any illness or disability, mental or physical so I think it's up to you. Disclosure is a personal choice. There is no right or wrong answer – it’s a case of ensuring your needs are met. The purpose of disclosure is to ensure students with mental health difficulties can access the support they are entitled to at university or college. Depression is one of the most common of all mental health difficulties and you constantly hear about it being an issue among students in the news. So ultimately, It's best to be honest about your past difficulties and your current needs.
