I believe that it is normal, especially when you don't have a lot of life experience. Only later in life do you really start noticing how much family members care and want to help. Try venting small problems at first, and start off by telling them that it was very hard to come before them with this. Test out the waters a little. Additionally, it's normal to feel closer to friends because you can relate to them more and they are usually going through similar life experiences and problems. When you are at work and school, you spend more time with them than you do family. Perhaps try spending some quality time at least once a week with a family member or your whole family and see if that helps you to draw closer.

It is normal to want to shut the door on certain family members when they are unhealthy/ toxic for you and your personal growth. I have struggled with shutting the door on certain members of my family, but not because of them. I didn’t want to shut the door on any family members partly because of dealing with the reality that this is the way things are and they are never going to change no matter how much I want it to (like when we don’t want to say things aloud because it makes it feel more real than when we don’t.). Another reason is that I struggled with the idea of closing doors is because I tend to care to much about what others think (I.e. if my parents aren’t at my wedding, telling people I have nothing to do with them). It is so important for us to take care of ourselves; to each person that may mean something else. The way I feel about it is that if someone only brings negativity and negative feelings into your life, regardless of their “their” title, they need to be removed. We must clean out the infection before we can really cleanse ourselves.
