I've gone to many churches in portland not because I truly believed, just like my parent, but because I wanted to understand how I feel and if this was right for me. And after a lot of reading and trying to understand what and who I am, I have sincerely talked to my parents and explained that I do not feel like them. I don't have the same beliefs. I explained that I believe in a higher power but that I'm not sure that God is this power. They totally understood me and let me act as I felt, not as they wished me to do. I totally admire them for this and love it even more than before. Maybe I'll later understand what my religion is, but for now, I'm happy to live with my beliefs.

It depends on how accepting or intolerant they are towards differences. Not all religious people are the same, but it can be very hard when your family is really strict about following religious morals and not accepting differences. You can try and do your best to explain your point of view when possible, and if you can't find a common ground, see if they can "agree to disagree" without holding it against you. If you still can't find common ground, don't forget that it's full of people out there who will accept and support you for who you are without trying to change you, and they will be there for you if things get hard with your family.
