Offering support can be the most positive way to help people. Some don't need advice but just a listening ear.

The best thing you can do is ask more detailed questions and give them positive and supportive answers.

Sometimes when I know someone is upset about something and doesn't want to talk about it, I just go up to them and give them a n´hug or a compliment or tell them that I appreciate them. It will brighten their day and make them feel loved

For sure listening to someone is an accomplishment we do , and giving them our opinions about their issues might help them , but always try to stay in the circle of the chat and don't get too personal with them without their agreement, you can always help them on a regular emotion caring basis .Try to ask polite and caring kind of questions , try to persuade them you are only giving your help .

Drop hints? Theoretical situations? And hypothetical situations? Explain it just as you are doing now? That you don't wish to intrude, but you are worried about them? It's nice to know that people do care. That in itself is not intrusive or imposing is it? ;)

Just be a goo listener if they want to talk, and if they don't, definitely don't ask. Be a friendly face, offer support in the form or jokes or food or anything they like without telling them you are doing it to make them feel better. It is obvious that you care, and that will get through to them :)

If you want to help them, tell them you're here to listen and then let them open up as they feel comfortable. It can be really hard to talk, but it's helpful to know that someone is there.

Wait until they start to talk about the topic and then join in. Allow them to lead the conversation before asking questions about things that they may potentially feel pressured to answer. If someone wants to talk about a topic they will talk when they are ready to. It may take time to build up a trusting space. Once the topic has been introduced to the chat, empathy and understanding will ultimately help the person to feel better about it, although some things are complicated and may evoke sadness as well are positive feelings and both are a healthy emotional release.
