Too much excerise, would be when you feel dizzy, having the urge to faint after you realize your limitations and continuing to force yourself to do it even when it's wrong.

I dont think you can go by time, but your body will surely tell you when you have had too much. You will notice your strength decrease, your heart rate will go to high, you can lose your appetite, have insomnia and so many other things. The best thing to do is to talk to your doctor and trainer who can help you find what is right for you : )

Its safe to say that if you work far beyond what your body is used to for a fair amount of time.
Or, if you burn off too many calories and don't get the daily amount you need.
For example, let us use me as a case study. I wanted to go on an exercise heavy diet that required me burning off 1000 calories a day from Cardio. I crashed and burned after a week. I physically could not handle it because I did not have the energy and my body wasn't accustomed to the rigorous routine.

Too much is :
More than 2 hours per exercise, more than 5 days a week.
Otherwise you'll reach the burnout and your body will be like, eating itself.
Rest is very essential for muscle recovery and building.
