Binging and purging are often used together when someone has an unhealthy approach to food. Binge eating can bring the person a sense of comfort because they are having emotional/physical hardships, and purging often results because the person will feel guilty about eating and try to 'clean' their bodies of food they view as dirty. Even though it is a vicious cycle and makes you feel miserable, the desire to get the comfort from food and then having this enormous sense of guilt from that binge are so strong, because that person does not know how to cope in any other way.

Even though when we think about it rationally we know it makes us feel bad, in that moment it is a compulsion. It is a coping strategy for reducing anxiety. Until we develop other strategies to deal with that anxiety the 'habit' will continue.
